Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Hoyas Fall 74-66 to No. 7/6 Marquette in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE – Despite it being a one-possession game going into the final minute of action, the Georgetown University men's basketball team could not hold on as they fell 74-66 to the No. 7/6 Marquette University Golden Eagles at Fiserv Forum on Tuesday evening. With the setback, the squad slips to 12-3 on the season and 3-1 in BIG EAST play while the seventh-ranked Golden Eagles improve to 14-2 overall and a perfect 5-0 in league action.

ON THE RECORD
"Well, obviously, that was an incredible BIG EAST game. And I feel like our young Hoyas are growing up in front of our eyes. We didn't win the war today, but, man, we had a hell of a battle. Really proud of our kids. I thought we battled right there. With two minutes left to play, I think it was, I think we had a one point lead. And I think a little bit of our inexperience showed. I think we had three costly turnovers that they took advantage of. I thought, you know, when we got a little tired, they had a little bit more depth than we had today. Not having Epps is a major, major blow to us. No excuse, because we were right there. But if you look at the overall picture of where our team is, how hard these men fought today, I couldn't be more proud." - Head Coach Ed Cooley

"Can't blame it on fatigue. I just feel like when I was in position to make plays, I kind of made mistakes, and I gotta do a better job of putting us in a better position to win the game. I gotta do a better job of taking care of the ball." - Malik Mack on playing without Jayden Epps

"Well, Kam Jones is a good player, so I knew it was going to be a tough guard, but I just tried to make everything tough for him - every shot tough for him. I knew he spins back to his left all the time, so I tried to just catch his move." - Micah Peavy on guarding Kam Jones

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Malik Mack led a quartet of Hoyas in double figures with 18 points on seven made field goals.
  • Micah Peavy added 13 points on the night while Thomas Sorber and Curtis Williams Jr. chipped in 11 and 10, respectively to round out those in double figures.
  • On the glass, Sorber grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season. He tallied a career-best five blocks as the squad managed eight on the night.
  • Mack and Peavy paced the offense, dishing out five and four assists, respectively.
  • Georgetown shot 43.6% (24-55) from the floor and 42.1% (8-19) from beyond the arc.
  • The Blue & Gray pulled down 38 rebounds to MU's 32. On the defensive end, Georgetown held the 28-20 advantage.
  • While the Hoyas forced 13 Golden Eagle turnovers on seven steals, it was the home team that held the advantage, forcing 19 GU turnovers on 16 steals.

MARQUETTE HIGHLIGHTS
  • Chase Ross led the Golden Eagle offense tallying 27 points on 7-12 shooting. Ross stuffed the stat sheet adding three rebounds, two assists, six steals and a block.
  • Marquette tallied 16 steals and shot 23-27 (85.2%) from the charity stripe.
  • The Golden Eagles shot 21-59 (35.6%) from the floor and 9-24 (37.5) from behind the arc.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Despite the Hoyas getting on the board first behind a Mack bucket, it was Marquette that took an early lead, up 12-5 with 15:04 on the clock.
  • However, a Sorber layup turned traditional three-point play sparked an impressive 26-6 run over nearly nine minutes of action that pushed the Hoyas ahead 31-18 (6:09). The GU defense held MU scoreless for almost four minutes of action as Jordan Burks knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers and Peavy tallied eight-straight points for the Blue & Gray.
  • The Golden Eagles started to generate some offense late but Georgetown continued to execute a stifling defense. With the shot clock winding down, Curtis Williams Jr. knocked down a triple to put the Hoyas up 12. However, an MU trey on the other end sent the squads into the locker room with the Hoyas up 38-29.
  • Marquette came out firing in the second half, knotting the game at 42 with 14:38 to play. The teams traded buckets and the home team took a four-point lead (54-50) before a Sorber jumper followed by a Curtis Williams Jr. 3-pointer gave GU the one-point advantage.
  • It would be a one-possession game through the final moments until a foul called on the Hoyas with less than a minute remaining sent the Golden Eagles back to the charity stripe. Marquette held on for the 74-66 victory at the final buzzer.
