Georgetown Drops Decision to Villanova

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team fell to the Villanova University Wildcats 77-62 on Wednesday evening in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at McDonough Arena. With the loss, the Hoyas drop to 8-7 on the season and 1-3 in league play, while the Wildcats improve to 8-8 on the year and 2-2 in the BIG EAST.
 
How it Happened
  • Villanova started out hot from downtown jumping out to an 11-4 lead, and didn't look back.
  • Midway through the quarter, GU cut it to five on a pair of free throws from graduate student Kelsey Ransom to make it 11-6.
  • However, the 'Cats would close out the quarter on a 14-4 run as the Blue & Gray trailed 25-10 at the end of the first.
  • Six quick points ballooned the VU lead to 21 early in the second quarter, before GU answered with a triple by freshman Jayden McBride.
  • The squads would trade buckets throughout the second quarter, but the Wildcats still held the significant 42-22 lead going into the break.
  • The Hoyas battled in the third, but Villanova managed to go up by as much as 27.
  • However, Georgetown didn't back down and continued to fight, staging an 8-0 run late in the third. The Hoyas trailed 71-49 after three.
  • A 5-0 Georgetown run fueled by a Ransom layup and a triple by junior Victoria Rivera began the final stanza.
  • Despite the momentum and a late run, the Hoyas would not find a way back, eventually falling 77-62.
Of Note
  • Ransom led the way with a career-high 35 points as well as tallying four steals in the contest.
  • Junior Modesti McConnell posted 10, and senior Kaliyah Myricks led on the glass with five boards to her credit.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 35.1% (20-57) from the field, but allowed the Wildcats 55.4% (31-56) shooting in the contest.
  • Georgetown was outrebounded by VU, 39-28, and forced 16 Wildcat turnovers on 10 steals.
  • Maddie Weber scored 19 points as one of four Wildcats in double figures.
  • Georgetown was without the services of senior Ariel Jenkins due to illness. She currently leads the league in rebounds averaging 10.4 rpg.
