WASHINGTON - The No. 14/20 Georgetown University men's soccer team defeated the University of Connecticut Huskies 4-1 on Saturday evening at Shaw Field. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 7-3-3 on the year and 3-0-1 in BIG EAST Conference play, while the Huskies drop to 7-3-3 for the season and 2-2-0 in the league.
Head Coach Brian Wiese
- "Tonight was a fantastic performance because of, in some ways, what happened on Tuesday. We had the midweek game. UConn didn't have to manage that, they had a full week to rest and prepare. But the mentality we showed through 90 minutes was really, really good, especially going down early in the game. We didn't panic, we just kept the game plan intact. Getting three points against a UConn team that is in really good form right now is a massive result. I thought everybody showed up and did the job today, and that's what you need to do to win in the league."
How it Happened
- Georgetown was dominant early on as dangerous chances from both sophomore Mitchell Baker and junior Mateo Ponce Ocampo were saved by UConn keeper Kyle Durham.
- Despite the possession, it was UConn that struck first as Charlie Holmes split the backline and found the back of the net in the 15th minute to make it 1-0.
- In the 28th minute, Ponce Ocampo danced along the endline and beat a pair of defenders before being tripped in the box which resulted in the penalty opportunity.
- Senior Zach Zengue stepped up and buried it to knot the contest at one as the rain poured down on Shaw Field.
- The Hoyas continued to fire, but could not find a second as the squads went into the break tied.
- UConn came out with momentum in the second half as the Hoya defense had questions asked of it throughout the half.
- In the 75th minute, the Hoyas got the break they needed as freshman Loukas Maroutsis sent it to Zengue who then found Baker on the left side. The forward fired to the far post to put GU on top 2-1.
- The 81st minute, Zengue sent in the free kick and the Husky defense knocked it in for the own goal to make it 3-1.
- The senior wasn't done yet as Zengue had a late shot at the post which was saved. He got the rebound and hit it back in as Georgetown took the 4-1 lead in the 88th minute which would stand as the final.
Of Note
- Georgetown outshot UConn 25-10, with 13 on goal to the Huskies' five.

- Senior Tenzing Manske took the win in the net with three saves for the game.
- It marked the fourth multi-goal game this season for Zengue.
