Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 18/24 Georgetown Defeats DePaul, 3-0

WASHINGTON - The No. 18/24 Georgetown University men's soccer team defeated the DePaul University Blue Demons 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Wish Field in Chicago. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 8-3-3 on the year and 4-0-1 in BIG EAST Conference play, while the Blue Demons drop to 2-5-6 for the season and 0-3-1 in the league.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "DePaul makes things difficult. They're playing for the playoffs and it wasn't a pretty result for us, but scoring three goals to stay top of the table going into the final few games of the regular season is really all you can ask for. It was a little uglier than what we wanted but, overall, it was a gritty road performance and you need those in the league, so we'll take it."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas dominated possession, but it was DePaul that had the best look midway through as a foul just outside the box gave the Blue Demons a good look at the goal. The shot was stopped by the wall to keep it scoreless.
  • In the 27th minute, sophomore Mitchell Baker managed to poke the ball away on a pass back by the Blue Demons. The forward dribbled into space and fired to the far post to make it 1-0.
  • The 43rd minute saw the Blue & Gray score a second tally as senior Zach Zengue sent it to junior Matthew Van Horn who connected with his left foot to put GU on top 2-0 which would stand at the half.
  • The Hoyas continued to battle in the second half, and in the 65th minute junior Mateo Ponce Ocampo added another to put the contest away. Baker sent it to him from the endline, and the midfielder shot to the upper corner to beat the keeper and put the Blue & Gray on top 3-0 which would stand as the final.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot DePaul 13-6, with five on goal to the Blue Demons' one.
  • The Hoyas were awarded seven corners to DePaul's five in the contest.
  • Sophomore Charlie DeMarco took the win in the net in his first-career start with one save for the game.
