Trio of Hoyas Combine for 48 as Hoyas Defeat George Washington 73-64 in Preseason Exhibition

WASHINGTON – Caleb Williams, Malik Mack and Kayvaun Mulready combined for 48 points in a preseason exhibition as the Georgetown University men's basketball team defeated the George Washington University Revolutionaries on Saturday evening at the Charles E. Smith Center in the District's Foggy Bottom neighborhood. The preseason exhibition was the first in a pair of preseason matchups the Hoyas have on the schedule before opening the season on Monday, November 3 when Georgetown hosts Morgan State at Capital One Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

ON THE RECORD
"Really, really appreciated this level of game this early, going into the season. We wanted to put our men in some tough environments, starting with our preparation, going to Canada, playing five really hard games in Canada, which we equated to high major games. We wanted to play a couple exhibition games on the road, one of which was here that we knew would bring some excitement, some energy. And I can tell you that GW and their staff and players did a great job - great job. The energy in the building was great. It's something that we looked forward to. I thought our players did a really good job, you know, matching the intensity, the early intensity, of which they play with, because they have a veteran team, and I saw our team grow a little bit today. We used a lot of bodies today, of which that was intentional. I think the strength of Georgetown this year is in the numbers. I think it's in the numbers and our depth. I think we have, you know, many, many good players at multiple positions. That was a really good game for this early in October to have this high level of an opportunity to come on the road, a tough environment for us to grow as a program. And then I thought both Caleb Williams and Malik Mack did a really good job. Again, this is what continuity looks like. This is what retention looks like in the world of this portal. The best thing that you can do is retain knowledge, understanding, chemistry and relationship with an organization. And I thought these two young men today really proved that. I think they made a big jump, big, big jump with their leadership. So in saying that I appreciated this opportunity to come to GW and I appreciate Coach Caputo and his staff for allowing this opportunity for Georgetown." - Head Coach Ed Cooley

"Trusting my teammates, knowing that they're able to make plays. I don't have to do too much, so I don't have to force up the shots, anything like that. So I'm just taking what the defense is there with me and trying to stay efficient by taking good shots and trusting my teammates, allowing them to make plays. Allowing them to make plays is taking the pressure off of my defense. So trusting my teammates. When I have my opportunities, I take my shots. - Malik Mack

"Our depth is amazing. I feel like even one through 11, you know, we got 11 guys that go out there and play hard and do everything that, you know, the team wants to do. So definitely have them for it to give us energy off the bench. KJ, a relentless defender, just gives the other team different looks that I think plays to our advantage." - Caleb Williams

  • Castro led GW on the glass, grabbing seven boards while Tyrone Marshall and Trey Autry each grabbed six.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The hosts opened up the scoring but Mack tallied the first six points of the game for the Blue & Gray as Georgetown took a 6-4 lead early in the frame. GW swung the momentum back to reel off five unanswered before back-to-back 3-pointers from Caleb Williams pushed the Hoyas back up 12-9.
  • A Lewis bucket pushed the lead back to three (14-11) before a jumper for the Revs made it a one-point game. However, Georgetown stepped on the gas, tallying the next four buckets for a 9-0 scoring run to take the 23-13 lead (9:49).
  • The Blue & Bluff wouldn't go away, clawing back to make it a one-possession game (25-22) with 8:07 remaining in the frame. However, GU strung together a 9-2 spurt fueled by four points from Caleb Williams, a tip-in from Seal Diouf and free throws from Mack and Jayden Fort to push the lead to double digits (34-24).
  • GW would close the gap to six (34-29) but a Mack bucket followed by a Halaifonua bucket off the Mack dish pushed the lead back to nine (38-29). A last-second 3-pointer for the Revs sent the squads into the locker room with the Hoyas up 38-32.
  • As the second half opened, both teams traded buckets as Caleb Williams and Mack continued to handle the majority of the scoring for the Hoyas. Mulready started to get hot from deep as he drained back-to-back triples to give the Hoyas a seven-point cushion (53-46) with 12:34 remaining.
  • Another Revs trey cut the deficit to four but a Halaifonua floater sparked a seven unanswered for GU fueled by another Mulready 3-pointer and capped with a Fort bucket as Georgetown took a 60-49 lead.
  • Both squads continued to trade buckets down the stretch and even though GW made it a two-possession game late (70-64, 1:23), trips to the free throw line helped the Hoyas hold on for the 73-64 victory.
