No. 15/22 Hoyas Defeat Villanova, 3-0

WASHINGTON - The No. 15/22 Georgetown University men's soccer team defeated the Villanova University Wildcats 3-0 on Saturday evening at Shaw Field in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 9-3-3 on the year and 5-0-1 in BIG EAST Conference play, while the Wildcats drop to 5-5-5 for the season and 1-2-3 in the league.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "Overall, I'm really happy with our performance tonight. I think we were efficient with our chances in the first half, and I liked that those looks got us on the board. It was really nice to get Tate Lampman back on the field, and getting him a goal is obviously wonderful. I thought Max Viera did an amazing job moving around and playing some positions that the team needed him to tonight. We won 3-0, and their goalkeeper made some really good saves too. You have to be happy in general with how that went against a conference rival. These were three really important points for us to get at this stage in the season."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas dominated possession early on, and on GU's fifth corner they finally found the back of the net as senior Zach Zengue served it in and sophomore Tate Lampman rose up above the defense to head it in.
  • The Blue & Gray would double the score in the 24th minute when Zengue sent a beautiful ball into space and found the charging Mateo Ponce Ocampo on the left side. Ponce Ocampo managed to strike the ball to sophomore Mitchell Baker, and the forward spun to his left seeing senior Max Viera at the top corner of the box. Viera fired to the far post to make it 2-0.
  • That score would stand at the half.
  • Georgetown continued to control the pace of the game throughout the second half.
  • Villanova would eventually get two shots on goal, but GU stayed on offense for much of the contest.
  • In the 80th minute, sophomores Mitchell Baker and David Urrutia combined for a give and go in the far corner as Baker banged it off of the post and in to make the score 3-0 in favor of the Blue & Gray.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Villanova 26-4, with 14 on goal to the Wildcats' two.
  • The Hoyas were awarded 11 corners to Villanova's four in the contest.
  • Senior Tenzing Manske took the win and the shutout in the net with two saves for the game.
  • Lampman's goal was his second of his career and the first of the season in his first game back from injury.
