WASHINGTON - The No. 13/16 Georgetown University men's soccer team used a commanding performance to defeat the Xavier University Musketeers 3-0 on Saturday evening at Shaw Field in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. The victory clinched the BIG EAST East Division Championship as well as the top seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Championship in Boyds, Maryland. Georgetown now improves to 10-3-3 on the year and 6-0-1 in BIG EAST Conference play, while the Musketeers drop to 5-6-4 for the season and 1-4-2 in the league.
Head Coach Brian Wiese
- "This is pretty awesome. It's been a group that has pushed through a lot of adversity. You think back to the beginning of the season, we're playing these tough games, and people are wondering if we're going to score goals? And it's hard, and then you see them just come through. They have a lot of fun playing together, some of the attacking stuff that they're doing right now is just a joy to watch. Seeing guys step up for an injured teammate, and playing well has just been hugely gratifying and a testament to the quality of the group at the moment. Being the number one overall seed, especially in a year where the conference is as strong as it is right now, is something we don't ever take for granted. So we're pretty happy, and we've got to see out the rest of the season."
How it Happened
- The Blue & Gray got on the board in the eighth minute of action as sophomore Zayan Ahmed sent a ball to the back post in his first-career start. Sophomore Tate Lampman got a head on it to send it back in, and classmate Mitchell Baker redirected the ball past XU keeper Jonny Mennell to make it 1-0.
- The Hoyas added another in the 32nd minute as senior Zach Zengue had a perfect turn and shot that ricocheted off of an XU defender and back to sophomore Aidan Godinho who fired to make it 2-0 which would stand at the break.
- Early in the second half, the Blue & Gray added one more when sophomore Jordi Sada-Paz had a shot blocked, but he was able to hit it right back in to give the Hoyas the 3-0 lead.
