Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 14 Georgetown Falls to Denver

WASHINGTON - The No. 14/20 Georgetown University men's soccer team fell on 89th minute goal 2-1 to the University of Denver Pioneers on Tuesday evening at Shaw Field. With the loss, the Hoyas drop to 6-3-3 on the year, while the Pioneers improve to 6-6 for the season.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "Denver's a team that played in the Final Four last year because they have an impressive culture that they bring with them, and credit to them for nipping the goal. But at the end of the day, we laid our own land mines that we stepped on. So, the first goal we created for them, the red card we created, and in some ways, the second goal as well. So, the details are things we're going have to start getting right again, which is what this group's done a really good job with."
How it Happened
  • Denver was on the front foot for the first 15 minutes of action as Georgetown spent a majority of time on defense.
  • In the 18th minute, a foul near the top corner of the box was reviewed and deemed a penalty. Senior Zach Zengue took it, and buried his 10th goal of the season to put the Hoyas up 1-0.
  • The lead was short lived, however, as the Pios answered just 55 seconds later off of a corner kick to the back post that was headed in by Trevor Wright.
  • Both teams pushed for another goal, but it would not come as they went into the break knotted at one.
  • The Hoyas pinned Denver in for much of the second half as the Blue & Gray served searching balls into the box.
  • Turnovers allowed the Pios some possession, as the Blue & Gray battled through a handful of scary moments.
  • In the 76th minute, a Georgetown red card forced the Hoyas to play a man down for the remainder of the contest.
  • Georgetown had chances, but it would be Denver to find the win as a free kick just outside the box was lofted in by Luke Schultz and into the back of the net to make the final 2-1.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Denver 14-5, and both the Hoyas and Pios had three on goal.
  • The Hoyas were awarded five corners to Denver's three in the contest.
  • Senior Tenzing Manske took the loss in the net with one save for the game.
