No. 11/13 Hoyas Tie Providence in Regular Season Finale

WASHINGTON - The No. 11/13 Georgetown University men's soccer team closed out regular season play with a 2-2 draw at Providence College on Friday evening in Providence, Rhode Island. Georgetown finishes the regular season with a mark of 10-3-4 on the year and 6-0-2 in BIG EAST Conference play, while the Friars move to 6-6-3 for the season and 4-2-2 in the league. Both teams have qualified for the BIG EAST Championship next week.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "Coming up to Providence and getting a result is not a bad thing for us, historically. Obviously it's disappointing to have a good performance in a really tough venue on a difficult playing surface with high winds and to not get the win. Losing the two goals put us in a tricky scenario, but I'm glad we were able to manage it. Despite our frustration, we won the league and we did it without losing a game, so there is a lot to be proud of."
How it Happened
  • Georgetown was quiet early on and it was Providence that managed some chances.
  • Twenty minutes into the match, the Friars had a good look but GU was able to counter down the left side. Junior Mateo Ponce Ocampo slid one across the face, and sophomore Mitchell Baker was perfectly positioned to tap it in to make it 1-0.
  • The Hoyas added to the score in the 34th minute when a shot from sophomore David Urrutia was saved, but the rebound went to senior Zach Zengue who buried it to make the score 2-0.
  • Providence would not go away, however, as the Friars answered less than a minute later when a ball trickled into the middle of the box and Angelo Ventrella was able to get a foot on it to send it in, cutting the GU lead to one which would stand at the half.
  • The Blue & Gray had another chance on a counter with about 30 minutes remaining as a shot from freshman Charlie Rosenthal hit the post.
  • In the 76th minute, Ventrella was able to head in a corner at the near post to knot the contest at two.
  • Neither team would find the go-ahead goal as the contest ended in a draw.
Of Note
  • Georgetown was outshot by Providence, 16-6, with three on goal to the Friars' six.
  • The Hoyas were awarded two corners to PC's six in the contest.
  • Senior Tenzing Manske took the draw in the net with four saves for the game.
