Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Lewis, Iwuchukwu and Mack Combine for 50 as Georgetown Downs Binghamton 83-70

WASHINGTON – KJ Lewis led a trio in double figures as he tallied the first double-double of his career to lead the Georgetown University men's basketball team past the visiting Binghamton Bearcats on Wednesday evening in the District. With the win at Capital One Arena, the Hoyas improve to 3-0 on the season while the Bearcats slip to 1-3.

ON THE RECORD
"So definitely just give Binghamton a lot of credit, a lot of credit hung around today. I thought we played for 11 minutes. If the game was 11 minutes, I would have been really, really happy. You never want to be discouraged about it but a win is a win. And we want to get better every single time. I thought we got better today for 11 minutes when we came out of the locker room. I thought overall, our focus, our attention to detail, our will, we've had back to back games where we've given up 25 plus free throws, so our discipline defensively has to improve. But you're going to have games like this here, and you got to give Binghamton all the credit. They came in here and they did a really good job. They made some shots, they made seven threes. We have not shot the three well, but I did like the way we came out of halftime. So the positive energy will go off as we prepare for Clemson." - Head Coach Ed Cooley

"I'm enjoying the experience at Georgetown and I'm enjoying the guys, to be honest. I'm enjoying the coaches, and there is just a belief. They believe in me and I believe in them. It's all working out." - Vince Iwuchukwu

"Coach Cooley is always emphasizing defense. Obviously, today wasn't our best team performance, but, coming into any game, my mentality is always to be the best defender on the floor when I can, and ultimately, to get to the next level, I feel like that's what my calling card is going to be. I take pride on that side. I come from a hard nosed background, so it's just a personal thing. When you have a coach like Coach Cooley, who's gonna emphasize it every day, it's hard not to compete on that end of the ball." - KJ Lewis

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • KJ Lewis led all scorers and a trio of Hoyas in double figures with 20 points on 8-for-14 shooting from the floor to go along with a game-best 10 rebounds for the first double-double of his career.
  • Vince Iwuchukwu came off the bench to tally an efficient 17 points on 5-for-9 shooting and a 7-for-9 performance from the charity stripe. The senior added six rebounds to his line.
  • Malik Mack scored 13 points, all in the second half, on 5-for-11 shooting and a perfect 2-for-2 effort from the charity stripe.
  • Jeremiah Williams paced the offense with five assists while Kayvaun Mulready tallied a game-best trio of steals.
  • The Hoyas forced 13 Binghamton turnovers on nine steals while committing just four of their own.

BINGHAMTON HIGHLIGHTS

  • Jackson Benigni had an efficient performance, scoring 15 points on 4-for-8 shooting from the field. Three of his made baskets came from beyond the arc as he led the team in made 3-pointers.
  • Demetrius Lilley posted 11 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds on the night.
  • Bryson Wilson scored 13 points on 4-for-7 shooting on the night, while grabbing six rebounds for the Bearcats.
  • The Bearcats shot 40.8% (20-49) from the field, 33.3% (7-21) from deep and 92.0% (23-25) from the charity stripe.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game started as a back and forth affair with five ties in the first five minutes as the game was knotted at 9-9 at 15:26. It would be back-to-back Kayvaun Mulready steals that led to back-to-back GU treys, one apiece from Mulready and Jeremiah Williams, that would push the Hoyas ahead seven, 16-9, and forcing Binghamton to call a timeout.
  • The Hoyas continued to push but consistent trips to the line for the Bearcats closed the gap to a one-point game on more than one occasion.
  • Another Binghamton three-point play made it a one-point game (35-34) before the Hoyas staged a 6-2 run over the final two minutes of action, including a buzzer-beating bucket from KJ Lewis to send the Hoyas into the break with the 41-36 advantage.
  • The second half saw GU start off hot, with a nine-point run fueled by five from Mack and buckets from Caleb Williams and Lewis pushing the Hoyas up 14 (54-40) with 14:15 on the clock.
  • The Hoyas would lead by as many as 16. Binghamton trimmed the lead to as few as 11 down the stretch before a Lewis traditional three-point play pushed the lead back to 16 (71-55). Gritty plays down low from DeShawn Harris-Smith, who scored an efficient eight points all in the second half, would put the game out of reach for the Bearcats as the Hoyas cruised to the 83-70 victory.

OF NOTE
  • Lewis tallied the first double-double of his collegiate career, finishing with 20 points and 10 rebounds. The junior has now scored in double figures 35 times in his career, with only three 20-point performances and just his second game with 10 rebounds.
