Hoyas Cruise to 90-45 Victory over Stonehill in Season Opener

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team downed the Stonehill College Skyhawks 90-45 on Thursday evening in the squad's 2025-26 opener at McDonough Arena. With the win, the Hoyas start the season with a 1-0 record, while the Skyhawks drop to 0-1 on the year.

Head Coach Darnell Haney

"I was happy to see us playing as a group tonight. I'm excited because we embraced what we talk about every day. We just embraced being together, being tight and being tough. Those are our core values. Our journey started today, and I was happy with us persevering through the preseason, and focusing tonight. Preseason is over, now it's go time."

How it Happened
  • Looking at a three-point advantage, the Blue & Gray staged an early 9-0 run sparked by a free throw from junior Khia Miller and capped off with back-to-back buckets by graduate student Laila Jewett to put the Hoyas on top 16-4.
  • Late in the first quarter, Stonehill cut the lead to eight but senior Victoria Rivera hit a triple and then added another at the buzzer as GU led 28-16 after one.
  • Sophomore Summer Davis opened the second quarter with a jumper, and a three-point play from graduate student Chetanna Nweke had the Hoyas firing on all cylinders.
  • Midway through the stanza, Miller went on an 8-2 run herself to balloon the lead to 25 points.
  • The Blue & Gray led 49-29 at the half.
  • The game began to get physical in the second half as the Hoyas spent much of the third period at the free throw line. The fouls allowed Georgetown to build the advantage to as much as 32.
  • Stonehill answered, but six late points made it 75-41 at the end of the third.
  • The Hoyas continued to build the lead, and Stonehill would never threaten as the Blue & Gray cruised to the 90-45 victory.
Of Note
  • Rivera was one of four Hoyas in double figures with 18 points including a perfect 4-4 performance from beyond the arc.
  • Miller added 17 points, while graduate student Brianna Scott had 11 points and six rebounds in her first game back from an injury suffered at the end of the 2023-24 season.
  • Jewett rounded out those in double figures posting 10 points, five assists and four rebounds in the contest.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 50.0% (32-64) from the field, and Georgetown held the Skyhawks to 37.5% (18-48) shooting.
  • GU outrebounded Stonehill 36-31, and Georgetown forced 26 Skyhawk turnovers on 16 steals.
  • Reese Roggenburk scored 11 points as one of two Skyhawks in double figures.
