Hoyas Hold On Against Creighton

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team held on and defeated the Creighton University Bluejays 76-74 in a BIG EAST Conference matchup on Sunday evening at McDonough Arena. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 8-4 overall and 1-2 in BIG EAST play, while the Bluejays drop to 6-7 on the year and 2-2 in league action.

Head Coach Darnell Haney

"Overall, I was proud of our performance. We stuck together and stayed the course. I knew Creighton was going to run, but we could have prevented the run a little bit if we had rebounded the ball. We have to do a better job of defensive rebounding, especially late in games. But overall, I'm proud of our group, this was a big win for us. We needed this one to move forward. I'm just proud of the effort of Khia Miller, Destiny Agubata, Bri Byars, Chet Nweke and even Alexia Araujo-Dagba was impactful in her time on the court. I'm proud of everyone for their efforts."

How it Happened
  • Georgetown started the game with a 9-2 run thanks to a suffocating full court press.
  • The Bluejays stopped the momentum with a bucket, but the Hoyas kept rolling as graduate student Chetanna Nweke knocked down a jumper and classmate Laila Jewett added a triple to make it 14-4.
  • Late points from Creighton cut the lead back to single digits, and a layup in the final minute of action from sophomore Destiny Agubata put the Hoyas up 18-13 after the first quarter of action.
  • The Bluejays battled back to take a one-point lead early in the second quarter, but the Blue & Gray would rattle off six straight to move back on top.
  • The Hoya defense continued to force turnovers, and the play of junior Khia Miller helped the Hoyas take the 11-point lead.
  • In the final minute, Creighton cut it to eight but sophomore Alexia Araujo-Dagba knocked down a 3-pointer to make it 46-35 at the half.
  • Creighton began the second half with a 6-0 run, but the Hoyas came roaring back as a layup from Miller sparked a 14-0 run to give the Hoyas their largest lead to that point.
  • Free throws kept the Hoyas comfortably on top leading 64-47 after three quarters of action.
  • Eight quick Bluejay points to begin the final stanza forced a Hoya timeout.
  • Creighton would fight back and cut it to two in the final seconds of action, but Georgetown managed to hold on for the 76-74 victory.
Of Note
  • Miller led the way with 20 points, while Agubata tallied her first-career double-double tallying 16 points to go along with 14 rebounds and going 10-10 at the line.
  • Jewett scored 12 points, and Nweke rounded out those in double figures with 10 to her credit.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 46.4% (26-56) from the field, and allowed just 34.3% (24-70) shooting by Creighton.
  • GU was outrebounded by CU 41-38, and Georgetown forced 14 Bluejay turnovers on seven steals.
