Hoyas Drop Conference Opener to Villanova

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University women's basketball's comeback fell short as the Hoyas lost 76-69 to the Villanova University Wildcats on Thursday evening in both squads' BIG EAST Conference opener at McDonough Arena. With the loss, the Hoyas drop to 5-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play, while the Wildcats improve to 7-2 on the year and 1-0 in league action.

Head Coach Darnell Haney
  • "Tonight, we didn't take care of business in the detailed areas. Free throws, layups, making sure we pay attention to the scout, all of those things were crucial to win this game. We put ourselves in a hole in the third quarter, and we had to fight out of that hole. But against a good team like Villanova, we can't do that. We can't we can't have those little mental lapses because against a good team with good players, they'll make you pay."
How it Happened
  • Georgetown jumped out to an early lead, with a bucket from graduate student Brianna Scott as well as a triple by classmate Laila Jewett.
  • The Hoyas clung to the lead throughout the first, until a late 7-0 Villanova run over the final three minutes of action put the Wildcats on top 14-11 after one.
  • The squads traded buckets, before a 10-2 Wildcat run built a significant lead.
  • Late in the half, the combo of junior Cristen Carter and sophomore Summer Davis combined for a quick five points to cut the lead to five.
  • However, Villanova scored with one second on the clock to make it 32-25 at the break.
  • Graduate student Chet Nweke opened the scoring in the third quarter, but Villanova came roaring back to stage an 11-2 run and force a Georgetown timeout.
  • With a minute to go, the Blue & Gray staged a 7-2 run that was capped off by a spin move in the lane from sophomore Indya Davis as the Hoyas trailed by 10, 54-44, at the end of the third quarter.
  • Sophomore Khadee Hession knocked down a triple to open the final stanza, but Villanova answered back.
  • Hession would hit another a minute later and the Hoya defense began generating turnovers to make it a six point game.
  • Despite the momentum, the comeback would not come as the Blue & Gray fell 76-69.
