Georgetown Drops Decision to Butler

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team lost a close one 76-70 to the Butler University Bulldogs on Wednesday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at McDonough Arena. With the loss, the Hoyas drop to 11-13 on the season and 4-9 in league play, while the Bulldogs improve to 14-13 on the year and 4-10 in the BIG EAST.
 
How it Happened 
  • Butler jumped out to an 8-0 lead, as the Hoyas called an early timeout to regroup. Out of the break, Georgetown began its comeback with a 6-0 run including points from graduate student Siobhan Ryan and freshman Alexia Araujo-Dagba.
  • The Bulldogs answered back, but the Blue & Gray would take its first lead of the game on an 8-0 that included a pair of triples from junior Victoria Rivera.
  • The teams traded buckets until the final seconds of the stanza when freshman Jaeda Wilson knocked down a 3-pointer, and senior Ariel Jenkins added a layup at the buzzer to give GU the 25-20 advantage.
  • Georgetown built the lead to nine early in the second quarter, before Butler answered back with a 9-0 run to knot the contest at 33.
  • A steal and layup from graduate student Kelsey Ransom ended the run, and Georgetown held the 38-36 advantage going into the half.
  • The momentum went back and forth in the third quarter with neither team able to gain a significant advantage.
  • With 1:16 left in the third, a layup from senior Jenkins tied it at 50. The Bulldogs had one last push and staged a 6-0 run to make it 56-50 heading into the final period.
  • Butler extended the lead early in the fourth, moving ahead by as much as 12.
  • Georgetown would not go away, however, staging a 7-0 run including a triple by freshman Khadee Hession and a layup from Jenkins to cut it to 68-63 and force a Butler timeout.
  • The Hoyas continued to chip away at the lead, cutting the deficit to three on a triple from graduate student Ryan with one minute to play.
  • Despite the comeback, it would not be enough as the Hoyas fell 76-70.
Of Note
  • Ransom led the way with 19 points and four boards as well as four assists and three steals.
  • Jenkins managed her ninth double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Rivera rounded out those in double figures with 14 points in the contest.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 45.0% (27-60) from the field, but allowed the Bulldogs 57.4% (27-47) shooting in the contest.
  • Georgetown outrebounded Butler, 35-24, and forced 16 BU turnovers on nine steals.
  • Sydney Jaynes led the way for Butler with 18 points as one of three Bulldogs scoring in double figures in the contest.
