Hoyas Go 2-0 on Day One of the Carolina Classic

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team went 2-0 on day one of the Carolina Classic in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The Hoyas took game one from the Queens (N.C.) Royals 8-1 before defeating the Wagner Seahawks 6-1. With a 2-0 day, the Hoyas improve to 5-2 overall.

GAME ONE | Hoyas 8, Queens (N.C) 1
 
HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
· Avery Wissmar went 2.2 hitless innings, tallying a strikeout and zero runs allowed.
· Kayla Dunn entered in relief and was lights out, going 4.1 innings pitched, allowing just one earned run on five hits while striking out four to earn the win.
· Claire Turner went 1-for-4 with a stolen base.
· Dani Koo tallied her third home run of the season. She went 1-for-3 with a homer, a walk, a stolen base and two runs scored. 
· Emily Strittmatter went 2-for-2 with two home runs, three RBIs, two walks, two stolen bases and four runs scored.
· Abby Kozo went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
· Sammy Fenton went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
· Brooke Rehban went 0-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.
· Gabby Park went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
· Nina Sarlo tallied a stolen base and scored a run.

HOW IT HAPPENED
· After a scoreless top of the first by Wissmar, Strittmatter stepped up to the plate with one on and two outs and belted a two-run home run to left-center field to give the Hoyas an early 2-0 lead.
· After a scoreless second inning, the Blue & Gray would get into and out of trouble in the third inning. Dunn got out of a bases-loaded jam by striking out Madyson Daughtry to keep the Royals scoreless after three.
· In the bottom half of the inning, Strittmatter repeated her first-inning heroics by hitting a towering solo shot to left field for her second home run of the game, growing the GU lead to 3-0.
· After a scoreless fourth inning from both sides, Queens (N.C.) would scratch out a run in the top half of the fifth off of an RBI single from Caroline Johnson to cut the lead to 3-1.
· However, the Hoyas would respond in the bottom half of the fifth. A Koo walk followed by a throwing error put Koo and Campos on the corners with no one out. Sarlo entered to pinch run for Campos, and she executed a double-steal with Koo to plate the fourth run for GU. An RBI walk from Rehban plated the fifth run before an RBI single from Park ballooned the lead to 6-1.
· The Hoyas would add insurance runs in the sixth off a Koo solo shot and a Kozo RBI double to grow the lead to 8-1.
· Dunn would shut the door, securing an 8-1 victory for the Hoyas.

GAME 2 | Hoyas 6, Wagner 1

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
· Parker went 4.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits while punching out three batters. Parker earned her first win of the season.
· Dunn shut the door in relief, going 3.0 perfect innings, striking out four of the nine batters she faced.
· Turner went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and an RBI.
· Koo went 1-for-3 with a walk, stolen base and a run scored.
· Strittmatter went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.
· Kozo went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
· Fenton went 1-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored and two RBIs.
· Campos went 1-for-3 with a walk.
· Rehban went 1-for-3 with a triple, a run scored and two RBIs.
· Park went 1-for-1 with two walks, a run scored and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
· After a scoreless first inning, the Hoyas got on the board with a three-run bottom of the second. A leadoff walk from Fenton led to a two-out RBI triple from Rehban to give GU an early 1-0 advantage. Park would follow with a two-out RBI single of her own before Turner drove her in with an RBI double. 
· The Seahawks were able to scratch out a run against Parker in the fourth, cutting the GU lead to 3-1.
· The Hoyas would respond in the bottom of the fifth inning, with Fenton hitting an RBI single to center to score Strittmatter to get the run back. GU would tack on another run to extend the lead to 5-1 after five innings.
· After a 1-2-3 inning from Dunn, the Blue & Gray added an insurance run when Fenton executed a safety squeeze to drive home Koo to grow the lead to 6-1.
· Dunn would shut the door, with her third-consecutive 1-2-3 inning to seal a 6-1 victory for the Hoyas.

OF NOTE
· Strittmatter hit two home runs in game one of the Carolina Classic while Koo hit one. Strittmatter and Koo lead the team in home runs with three apiece.
· Dunn picked up her third win of the season in game one. Dunn is now 3-1 on the season.
· Parker picked up her first win of the season in game two of the Carolina Classic.
