Hoyas Fall to Golden Eagles

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team fell to the Marquette University Golden Eagles 55-50 on Saturday evening in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at McDonough Arena. With the loss, the Hoyas drop to 11-16 on the season and 4-12 in league play, while the Golden Eagles improve to 19-8 on the year and 11-5 in the BIG EAST.

Head Coach Darnell Haney
  • "We just need to keep pushing, we're right there. It's the key moments in the game that we have to capitalize on, we aren't always doing that but we also start two freshmen. We have youth out there, so our veterans have to make sure that they're savvy enough and making the right plays to put us in a position to win."
How it Happened
  • Marquette began the game on a 10-2 run before the Hoyas could answer back with a layup from senior Ariel Jenkins and a triple by freshman Jayden McBride.
  • Seven quick MU points gave the Golden Eagles the 10-point lead, but the Hoya defense would lock down for the rest of the quarter and the Blue & Gray managed to cut it to 17-13 after the first.
  • A bucket from freshman Alexia Araujo-Dagba and a 3-pointer from classmate Khadee Hession began the second quarter for Georgetown as the Hoyas took their first lead of the game.
  • Marquette would quickly regain the small advantage, however, the Hoyas stayed within a possession for the rest of the stanza.
  • Graduate student Kelsey Ransom would score the remainder of GU's points as the Blue & Gray went into the locker room trailing 28-26.
  • Back-to-back 3-pointers early in the third made it a seven-point game and forced a GU timeout. The Hoyas would answer back with layups from Ransom and Hession to stay within striking distance.
  • A triple from Jenkins put the Hoyas on top by two, but late scores from the Golden Eagles made it 41-40 after three.
  • The fourth quarter was a game of runs as both squads had momentum, but neither could pull away.
  • Despite Georgeown's best efforts, the squad struggled to score down the stretch eventually falling 55-50.
Of Note
  • Ransom led the way with 22 points, while Araujo-Dagba had a good night with eight points in the contest.
  • Jenkins led the Hoyas on the glass with 11 rebounds on the night.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 32.7% (17-52) from the field, but allowed the Golden Eagles 33.9% (19-56) shooting in the contest.
