Hoyas Down Xavier in BIG EAST Matchup

CINCINNATI - The Georgetown University women's basketball team got back in the win column with a 63-36 victory over the Xavier University Musketeers on Wednesday evening in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at Cintas Center in Cincinnati. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 11-11 on the season and 4-7 in league play, while the Musketeers drop to 6-17 on the year and 1-11 in the BIG EAST.

Head Coach Darnell Haney
  • "I'm proud of our perseverance through the fourth. We had a couple of mishaps in the third, and got in some foul trouble allowing them in the bonus. Some carelessness with the ball gave them a run, but we persevered and got through that and made some good plays down the stretch. Shout out to our team as a whole. We did a great job on the defensive end of the floor, and we had put a big emphasis on that this week. Congratulations to Siobhan on her 1,000 points, we're glad she got it with us. But overall, I'm just proud of young women. They played Georgetown Defense, and we came out with a big victory."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas dominated the first quarter holding Xavier to just a pair of buckets.
  • Freshman Khadee Hession opened the scoring with a 3-pointer, and never looked back as she added a three-point play.
  • In the final seconds, freshman Amanda Ajobiewe snagged an offensive rebound and put it right back up to make it 15-4.
  • The Musketeers scored first in the second quarter, but the combo of graduate student Kelsey Ransom and senior Ariel Jenkins put together an 8-0 run.
  • Ransom would knock down a pair of free throws late in the stanza as the Hoyas led 25-12 at the break.
  • Xavier came out of the half on a 6-2 run to cut the GU lead to nine, but back-to-back triples from junior Victoria Rivera and freshman Jayden McBride gave the Hoyas the 33-20 advantage and forced a Xavier timeout.
  • Xavier rallied to pull within five with 3:47 to play, but a 7-0 GU run including four points from graduate student Siobhan Ryan made it 40-28 at the end of the third quarter.
  • Georgetown hit the gas in the fourth going on a 23-6 run in the stanza and cruising to the 63-36 victory.
Of Note
  • Ryan led the way with 16 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Her 16 points were good enough to put her over 1,000 in her career including both her time at Richmond and on the Hilltop.
  • Ransom also scored 16 points, and pulled down seven rebounds with three assists.
  • Jenkins had an all-around performance posting 11 points and 13 rebounds as well as four blocks and three steals. It marked her eighth double-double of the season.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 45.7% (21-46) from the field, and allowed the Musketeers just 27.1% (16-59) shooting in the contest.
  • Georgetown outrebounded Xavier, 43-22, and forced 16 XU turnovers on 13 steals.
