Hoyas go 1-1 on Day Two of the Liberty Softball Invitational

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University softball team went 1-1 on day two of the Liberty Softball Invitational in Lynchburg, Virginia. The Hoyas won Game one against the Drexel Dragons, 16-4, before falling to the Lehigh Mountain Hawks, 4-3. With the split, Georgetown moves to 8-4 overall.

GAME ONE | Hoyas 16, Drexel 4

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS

·       Kayla Dunn earned the win for the Hoyas, going 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on six hits, walking three, and striking out five.

·       Julia Parker entered in relief, tossing 2.1 innings, allowing one run (zero earned) on two hits, striking out two, and walking none.

·       Brooke Rehban had a big day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double, a stolen base, and four RBIs.

·       Dayanara Campos also had a standout performance, going 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and four RBIs.

·       Sammy Fenton went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

·       Emily Strittmatter was 1-for-3 with two walks and three runs scored.

·       Nina Sarlo picked up an RBI and scored a run.

·       Claire Turner scored two runs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hoyas erupted offensively early, scoring five runs in the first inning. A Gabby Park RBI single, followed by walks from Strittmatter and Campos, loaded the bases for Abby Kozo, who delivered an RBI single to give Georgetown a 2-0 lead. With the bases still loaded, Rehban stepped up and hit a two-out, two-run single to extend the lead to 4-0. The Hoyas would add one more run, taking a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the first.

After a quick, 1-2-3 inning for Dunn in the bottom half of the first, Fenton added to the lead with her first home run as a Hoya, making it 6-0.

Dunn kept Drexel off the board until the fourth inning, when the Dragons scored one run to cut the lead to 6-1.

Drexel continued to chip away, scoring two more runs in the fifth to make it 6-3. However, the Hoyas escaped further threats and held the Dragons scoreless heading into the top of the seventh.

In the seventh, Georgetown's offense exploded for 10 runs on five hits, including a two-run single by Campos, a two-run double by Rehban, and another two-run single by Campos to make it 16-3. The Hoyas secured the 16-4 victory.

GAME TWO | Hoyas 3, Lehigh 4

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS

·       Sage Hager pitched a complete 6.0 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits, walking one, and striking out three.

·       Rehban went 3-for-3.

·       Kozo went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

·       Strittmatter went 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.

·       Hollie Pardini went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Both teams' pitchers were dominant early, with the game scoreless through three innings and just two hits apiece. In the fourth, Lehigh struck first, scoring three runs to take a 3-0 lead.

Georgetown responded in the fifth, with a Strittmatter sac fly cutting the lead to 3-1. Lehigh answered in the bottom of the inning, pushing the score to 4-1.

The Hoyas mounted a late rally in the sixth, scoring two runs, including an RBI single by Pardini, to make it 4-3. Georgetown had two runners on in the seventh but was unable to tie the game, falling 4-3 in the second game of the doubleheader.

OF NOTE

·       The Hoyas recorded a season-high with 16 runs, surpassing their previous best of 15 runs against Charleston Southern on February 8.

·       Dunn earned the win in game one, improving to 4-2 on the season.

·       Rehban went 5-for-8 on the day, with four RBIs.
