WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University softball team dropped the first game of a three-game series to St. John's, 5-2, at Red Storm Field in Queens, New York, on Friday. The Hoyas fall to 8-9 on the season, while the Red Storm improve to 18-8.
"We need to make adjustments sooner in the box and learn to change the momentum when it's not on our side." – Head Coach Karla Ross
Hoya Highlights
- Julia Parker started for the Hoyas, going 2.1 innings, allowing three runs on two hits, while walking one and striking out two.
- Kayla Dunn entered in relief and was terrific. The graduate student went 2.2 innings, allowing just one earned run on one hit, walking one, and striking out six batters.
- Naya Campos went 1-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs, and a run scored.
- Claire Turner was 1-for-3 with a single and a run scored.
- Emily Strittmatter went 0-for-2 with a walk.
How It Happened
- The Hoyas got on the board in the top of the first. With one on and one out, Campos belted a two-run shot to right-center to give Georgetown an early 2-0 lead.
- The Hoyas held the lead until the bottom of the second, when the Red Storm hit an RBI double to score a runner from first, taking a 3-2 lead.
- Georgetown's offense struggled to get going, as St. John's extended its lead in the fourth. A walk, two hits, a hit-by-pitch, and a sacrifice fly plated two runs, pushing the Red Storm's lead to 5-2.
- St. John's added three insurance runs in the sixth, extending its lead to 8-2. That score would stand as the Red Storm won the first game of the series.
Of Note
- Campos hit her fifth home run of the season and her third home run in conference play. With the homer, Campos moved into sole possession of fifth place all-time in home runs, passing Mae Forshey.
- Dunn struck out six of the eight batters she retired. The graduate student leads the team in strikeouts with 34.
