WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against St. John's in Queens, New York on March 15. The Hoyas fell to St. John's 7-4 in game one before dropping the second game 12-2 in five innings. With both losses, the Hoyas fall to 8-11 on the season and 0-6 in conference action.
GAME ONE | Hoyas 4, St. John's 7
HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
- Sage Hager went 1.2 innings in relief, allowing two runs on two hits, while walking and striking out zero.
- Emily Strittmatter was 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, two runs scored and three RBIs.
- Abby Kozo went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
- Claire Turner went 1-for-2 with a double and two runs scored.
- Nina Sarlo drew a walk and stole a base.
- Gabby Park drew a walk.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless top of the first by Georgetown, St. John's got on the board first with a solo home run, taking an early 1-0 lead.
- The Hoyas threatened in the second inning after a Kozo single and a Sarlo walk put runners on first and second with one out. However, St. John's tallied a strikeout and a groundout to escape the early trouble and keep Georgetown scoreless.
- In the bottom half of the inning, the Red Storm extended their lead with another solo home run and two additional runs to break the lead open at 4-0.
- The GU offense would chip away in the third. Three consecutive doubles from Turner, Strittmatter and Kozo would plate two runs, cutting the deficit in half at 4-2.
- Hager would enter in relief and get a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the third to give the Hoyas some momentum, but the St. John's offense would counter in the fourth with a two-run home run to push the lead back to four at 6-2.
- The Blue & Gray offense would threaten, but could not push runs across the plate. The Red Storm would push an insurance run on the board extending the lead to 7-2.
- With two outs in the seventh, Strittmatter hit a towering two-run home run to cut the deficit to three, but it would be too little too late as the Hoyas dropped the opening game of the doubleheader.
GAME 2 | Hoyas 2, St. John's 12
HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
- Wissmar was excellent in relief, going 3.1 innings, allowing one run and one hit while walking one batter and striking out five.
- Turner went 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored.
- Campos went 2-for-3 with both RBIs.
- Kozo was 1-for-3.
- Park was 1-for-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Georgetown got on the board first. Turner walked, stole second and wound up scoring off of a Campos RBI groundout to get the Hoyas up 1-0.
- St. John's would have a massive bottom of the first. The Red Storm tallied 11 runs on seven hits, including a grand slam to put the game out of reach in the first and give St. John's a 11-1 lead after one.
- The Red Storm would hold the Blue & Gray offense silent, allowing just one run in innings two through five to secure a 12-2 win to complete the series sweep.
OF NOTE
- Kozo tallied four hits across the two contests. The sophomore was 4-for-5 with a double and an RBI across both games. On the season, Kozo is hitting .367.
- Strittmatter's home run in the seventh inning of game one was her fifth on the season, tying Campos for the team lead.
- With two RBIs in game two, Campos has now tallied four this series. Campos leads GU in RBI's with 18.
- Wissmar struck out five batters in game two of the doubleheader, matching her season-high against Siena on February 7.
