Softball Falls to Villanova in Opening Game of the Series

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team came up short against the Villanova Wildcats 11-3 in the first game of a three-game set. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 8-13 on the season with a 0-7 mark in BIG EAST play while the Wildcats improve to 13-14 with a 5-2 mark in conference action.

Hoya Highlights

How it Happened

  • After a scoreless first inning from Kayla Dunn, the Georgetown offense got off to a hot start. The Hoyas would load the bases with no one out for Strittmatter, who belted a two run double in the right center field gap to get the Hoyas up 2-0 early.
  • That score would hold until the third inning, when Villanova's bats would come to life. The Wildcats would tally five runs on two hits, powered by a two-run double and a two-run home run to quickly flip the score to 5-2.
  • Villanova would tack on another run in the fourth to extend its lead. In the bottom half of the inning, Claire Turner belted a towering solo shot to left field to give the Hoyas life and trim the deficit to 6-3.
  • The Wildcats had another offensive outburst in the sixth innings. Villanova would send nine batters to the plate and score five more runs to extend the lead to 11-3.
  • Georgetown would go down 1-2-3 in the sixth inning and the Hoyas would lose by the run rule and drop the opening game 11-3.

Of Note

  • Turner belted her fourth home run of the season, doubling her total from last season. The junior had two hits and scored two runs.
  • Strittmatter tallied her 13th and 14th RBIs of the season with a two run double. The sophomore is second on the team in runs batted in.
