Georgetown Falls to Seton Hall in BIG EAST Opener

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University softball team lost to Seton Hall 5-3 in its BIG EAST Conference opener. The Hoyas fall to 8-6 on the season, while the Pirates improve to 7-9.

"Today was a tough one. The ladies showed fight throughout the game, never giving up. However, we talked post game about competing the whole game. We came out flat and they didn't. We just need to click on both sides of the field for seven innings tomorrow." – Head Coach Karla Ross

Hoya Highlights
  • Claire Turner went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
  • Abby Kozo went 2-for-3.
  • Emily Strittmatter went 1-for-3 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI.
  • Brooke Rebhan went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
  • Sammy Fenton went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
  • Sage Hager pitched 2.0 innings, allowing four runs on four hits, walking none, and striking out none.
  • Julia Parker pitched 4.0 innings in relief, allowing one run on four hits, walking one, and striking out four.
How It Happened
  • After a scoreless first inning by the Hoyas, the Pirates took the lead with a two-run home run. Seton Hall led 2-0 early.
  • Georgetown was retired in order for the first three innings, while the Pirates extended their lead with another two-run homer, making it 4-0.
  • The Blue & Gray fought back, scoring two runs in the top of the fourth. A Turner double was driven home by a Strittmatter double, putting Georgetown on the board. A Fenton single down the right-field line then scored Strittmatter to cut the deficit to 4-2.
  • Seton Hall answered in the bottom of the fifth with one run, extending the lead to 5-2.
  • The Hoyas were held in check until the seventh inning when Rebhan drove in a run with an RBI double, cutting the lead to 5-3. However, Georgetown could not complete the comeback, and the Hoyas dropped the first game of the three-game series.
Up Next
Georgetown will play Seton Hall tomorrow, March 8, at noon at Essex County Mike Sheppard Field in South Orange, New Jersey, for the second game of the three-game series.
