Purkey, Deng and Spence join Georgetown Football Coaching Staff

WASHINGTON – Georgetown University Football Head Coach Rob Sgarlata has announced three additions to the team's coaching staff as Kyle Purkey, Kuony Deng and Cam Spence have joined the program. Purkey will coach the defensive backs, Deng will work with the outside linebackers and Spence will direct the defensive line.

"We are extremely excited to welcome Kyle, Cam and Kuony and their families to the Hoya Football coaching staff," said Sgarlata. "Collectively, they bring a wealth of playing and coaching experience to our defensive staff. In a short period of time this spring, I have been very impressed with their ability to teach and connect with our players. They are making an immediate impact with our players on the field and in our recruiting efforts."

Kyle Purkey
Purkey joins the Hoyas after spending the 2024 season as the defensive backs coach at Muhlenberg College. Prior to coaching the Mules, Purkey spent five years as the linebackers coach at Bridgewater College, where he also served as special teams coordinator for two seasons and defensive coordinator in the spring of 2024. During his time there, he coached six All-America selections and an NCAA Division III statistical champion in kickoff returns.

Bridgewater allowed an average of only 18.8 points per game during Purkey's tenure and ranked among the Division III leaders in takeaways in both 2022 and 2023. He helped lead the Eagles to an Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship, national ranking and NCAA Tournament home game in 2019.

Prior to Bridgewater, Purkey spent one season as special teams coordinator and inside linebackers coach at Maine Maritime Academy and one as defensive/special teams quality control assistant with his alma mater, James Madison University, helping the Dukes reach the 2017 FCS national championship game.

Purkey was an assistant coach at McDaniel College from 2015 through the spring of 2017, starting as running backs coach and ending as special teams coordinator/linebackers coach. He was also the assistant special teams coordinator/intern wide receivers coach with JMU in 2014 and an assistant wide receivers coach at Stevenson University in 2013.

Purkey graduated from JMU in 2013 with a degree in kinesiology and a minor in coaching education. He completed his master's degree in exercise science and physical education at McDaniel.

Kuony Deng
Deng joins the Hoyas after spending the 2024 season as a defensive line graduate assistant at Oregon State University. Prior to Oregon State, Deng was a defensive line and linebackers coach at Training Haus, where he worked with the nation's top collegiate football players to prepare them for Pro Days and the NFL Combine.

Before coaching, Deng played linebacker at the University of California, Berkeley (2019-21). While at Cal, the Virginia native was a two-time team captain and two-time All-Pac-12 linebacker. Deng also recorded Cal career totals of 154 tackles, 10.0 tackles for loss (-37 yards), 3.5 sacks (-14 yards), eight pass breakups, eight passes defended, six quarterback hurries, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.

Following his career at Cal, Deng was a member of the 2022-23 Chicago Bears practice squad and became the first person of South Sudanese Heritage to make it to the NFL.

Deng graduated from Cal in December of 2020 with a bachelor's degree in American studies before earning graduate certificates in entrepreneurship in May of 2021 and business administration in December of 2021.

Cam Spence
Spence joins the Hoyas after spending the 2023 and 2024 seasons at the University of North Carolina. Spence joined the Tar Heels as a defensive line graduate assistant in 2023 before being elevated to assistant defensive line coach in 2024. While coaching the defensive line at UNC, the Tar Heels finished sixth in the country in team sacks (39) and two players finished in the top 50 in sacks.

Prior to North Carolina, Spence was a defensive line graduate assistant at Ohio State during the 2022 season. While at OSU, Spence coached First Team All-B10 JT Tuimoloau and Zach Harrison, Third Team All-B10 Mike Hall Jr. and Honorable Mention All-B10 Jack Sawyer. In addition to working with the Tar Heels, Spence was a Bill Walsh Fellow Coach with the Los Angeles Rams in 2023.

Before starting his coaching career, Spence played defensive tackle at the University of Maryland from 2017-19. After medically retiring, Spence was a student assistant coach for the UMD defensive line.
