Hoyas Drop Final Game at UConn

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team came up short against the UConn Huskies, 12-0 in the final game of a three-game series in Storrs, Connecticut. With the loss, Georgetown falls to 10-30 on the season with a 1-20 mark in BIG EAST play while UConn improves to 31-14 with a 17-4 mark in conference action.

"Free bases are what did it for us today. We fought offensively and did a great job laying off the rise. However giving a team like that free bases and extra bases will make it hard to win." - Head Coach Karla Ross

Hoya Highlights

How it Happened

  • Georgetown was able to get ducks on the pond early, having its first two hitters reach base with walks, however the Hoyas could not bring those runners home in the top of the frame. In the bottom of the frame, UConn got on the board first with an error, a stolen base and then a single to give them an early 1-0 lead.
  • The Hoyas got two more runners on with walks in the top of the second inning but again couldn't cash in the free passes, as the score remained 1-0 heading into the bottom of the second.
  • The Huskies would grow their lead in the bottom of the second off of a RBI single followed by a two-out RBI triple to grow the lead to 3-0.
  • The third inning was quiet for both sides, but in the bottom of the fourth the Huskies put up a crooked number. UConn sent 13 batters to the plate, scoring nine runs on five hits while also drawing four walks to take a 12-0 lead heading into the fifth inning.
  • The Hoyas were able to rally in the fifth, putting up three runs courtesy of a Fenton two-run double and a Strittmatter RBI single, but it was not enough as the Hoyas fell 12-3 in five innings due to the run rule.
