Strittmatter’s Two Home Runs Lifts Hoyas over George Mason 5-3

WASHINGTON - With the help of a pair of home runs from Emily Strittmatter, the Georgetown University softball team picked up a 5-3 win over George Mason on Wednesday in Fairfax, Virginia. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 9-23 on the season while the Patriots fall to 15-25.

"Today was a great team win. The ladies looked like they were having fun and mentally locked in for 7 innings. That's something we really worked on this past week." - Head Coach Karla Ross

Hoya Highlights

  • Kayla Dunn had a sensational outing on the mound for the Hoyas. The graduate student went the full seven innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits, walking two and striking out three.
  • Emily Strittmatter had a monster day at the dish. The sophomore went 2-for-3 with two home runs and four RBIs.
  • Brooke Rebhan went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored.
  • Dani Koo was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
  • Sammy Fenton went 1-for-4 with a run scored.
  • Hollie Pardini was 1-for-3.
  • Dayanara Campos tallied two walks and scored a run.

How it Happened

  • Georgetown got off to a blistering start. After back-to-back singles from Rebhan and Fenton, Strittmatter came up with two on and no one out and belted a towering three-run home run to dead center to give the Hoyas a 3-0 lead three batters into the game. GU would tally two more hits, which included an RBI single from Koo to grow the lead to 4-0.
  • George Mason would answer with a rally of their own in the bottom of the first. A leadoff walk would come around to score on a wild pitch to get the Patriots on the board at 4-1 after one inning.
  • In the top of the second with no one on and two out, Strittmatter picked up right where she left off, hitting another towering home run to left field to grow the Georgetown lead to 5-1.
  • Dunn would retire the side in order in the bottom of the second, keeping the lead at 5-1.
  • That score would stand until the bottom of the fifth inning, when GMU would add a run courtesy of a single, two stolen bases and an RBI groundout, trimming the deficit to 5-2.
  • Both sides would each put up a zero in the sixth to bring the score to 5-2 heading into the seventh inning.
  • George Mason would put up a run in the seventh, but Dunn would bear down and get out of trouble, securing a 5-3 win for Georgetown.

Of Note

  • Strittmatter tallied two home runs and four RBIs in this contest. This is the second multi-home run game this season for the sophomore (Queens, N.C on February 22)
  • Dunn set down 11 consecutive batters from the first inning until the fifth inning, setting a season-high for the graduate student.
