Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 25 Georgetown Falls to Maryland 1-0

WASHINGTON - The No. 25 Georgetown University men's soccer team fell 1-0 in a local rivalry to the University of Maryland Terrapins on Monday evening in Georgetown's home opener under the lights at Shaw Field. With the loss, the Hoyas drop to 0-2 overall, while Maryland improves to 1-0 on the year.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "That was another tough game, but you've got to be happy with the performance, to be honest. I thought the guys played well. Maryland/Georgetown is always really fun, and we had a great crowd for our first game under the lights, so it was pretty special. Credit to Maryland for finding a way to get a goal and the frustration we'll have is that we had a lot of really good opportunities and just couldn't quite finish. Their goalkeeper deserves a ton of credit, he made some very good saves but we have to find that final bit which is missing. But it's early in the season and that will come."
How it Happened
  • Maryland had the first look at the goal, but the Hoyas countered right back on a shot from junior Matthew Van Horn whose strike sailed just over the crossbar.
  • Georgetown keeper Tenzing Manske came up with a big stop on the other end, but Georgetown answered forcing Laurin Mack to make a save on a shot from sophomore Mitchell Baker.
  • The Hoyas continued to push, and a shot from senior Zach Zengue clanged off of the crossbar as GU searched for the first goal of the match.
  • Despite the momentum, the teams went into the break in a scoreless tie.
  • The Blue & Gray were dominant in the second half, as the Hoyas had shot after shot, but Mack was able to make the stops.
  • The contest changed in the 65th minute when Sadam Masereka managed to get it past Manske as he came off of his line in transition to make it 1-0.
  • Georgetown would not find the equalizer in the closing minutes as 1-0 would stand as the final.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Maryland 18-15, and had six shots on goal to the Terps' five.
  • The Hoyas were awarded seven corners to UMD's eight.
  • Manske took the loss in the net with four saves in the contest, while Mack had the win notching six saves for the game.
