Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Hoyas Down No. 3 Pitt, 1-0

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer team used a late goal to pick up a 1-0 victory over the No. 3 University of Pittsburgh Panthers on Friday evening under the lights at Shaw Field. With the win, the Hoyas pick up their first victory of the 2025 campaign while handing Pitt its first loss.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "I thought Pitt came out really strong, but we still had a chance against the run of play. The first 20 minutes, it felt like Pitt was going to score, but then for the last part of the first half and the vast majority of the second our guys were really good. They played on their front foot and got a bit braver. We got in some great spots to score, and Ollie (Stafford) put one in. When you play a team like Pitt, you know you're going to have moments where it's hard. and moments where it's good. The nice thing about our group tonight was that we took advantage of our moments, and that is hopefully something we can build on for Monday with Vermont coming in."
How it Happened
  • Both the Hoyas (1-2) and Panthers (2-1) controlled play through the first half.
  • Despite some good looks, it was Pitt that had a pair of shots on goal which forced GU's senior keeper Tenzing Maske to come up with a pair of stops.
  • The teams would go into the break in a scoreless tie.
  • The Blue & Gray picked up the pace in the second half as the squad continued to push down the right side.
  • Midway through the stanza, junior Matthew Helfrich had a long run and elected to shoot to the far side where the ball caromed off of the post as the Hoyas searched for a goal.
  • The goal came in the 75th minute after a scramble in front of the box. With the ball flying around, sophomore Tate Lampman controlled it on the end line and sent it to Zach Zengue. The senior slid it in front of the net, and found the foot of junior Oliver Stafford who fired it in to make it 1-0.
  • The Georgetown defense would stand strong through the final minutes of action, and held on for the 1-0 victory.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Pitt 13-9, and both teams managed three shots on goal.
  • The Hoyas were awarded eight corners to Pitt's four.
  • Manske took the win in the net with three saves and the shutout, while Jack Moxom took the loss with two saves in the game.
  • Stafford's goal was the first of his career on the Hilltop.
