Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Georgetown Ties No. 1 Vermont

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer team tied the No. 1 University of Vermont Catamounts 1-1 on Monday afternoon at Shaw Field. The Catamounts entered the game as the top-ranked team in the nation and the reigning national champions. With the draw, the Hoyas move to 1-2-1 on the season, while Vermont sits at 2-0-2 for the year.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "These are important games to play, and that's the reason we put them on the schedule, we have to manage it. I thought Vermont did a really good job in the second half imposing their style on the game, and I think we're a little frustrated that we weren't able to settle it at any point. To be fair we had some chances after they scored and their keeper made a great save, but it's a really well coached, disciplined Vermont team. But in general, this is a great experience for the guys to grow out of. It's tough when you think you have the game wound up and then you lose the goal. But we have to learn from that and move forward quickly with Duke rolling in on Friday. This is why we play these games, the margins are small and we know it's going to be difficult, but the hope is that we learn from it for next time."
How it Happened
  • An early goal from the Hoyas set the tone in the 13th minute as senior Zach Zengue fired a shot that was saved by Vermont keeper Niklas Herceg. The rebound fell to sophomore Mitchell Baker at the right post who sent it back in to make it 1-0.
  • The Hoyas kept pushing, and Vermont struggled to maintain possession as the long shot on goal was saved by GU keeper Tenzing Manske.
  • Georgetown went into the break leading 1-0.
  • Vermont looked like a different team coming out of the half, and the Catamounts kept the Hoyas on their back foot.
  • As the minutes ticked away, the game became physical and Vermont continued to look like the more dangerous side.
  • The Catamounts broke through in the 86th minute as a bouncing ball forced Manske off his line, and Maximillian Kissel popped it over his head and into the net to knot the contest at one.
  • On the other end of the pitch, Baker had another chance off of a free kick as his shot was stopped with a diving save from Niklas Herceg.
  • Despite some late attempts, the 1-1 draw would hold.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Vermont 10-5, and had six shots on goal to the Catamounts' two.
  • The Hoyas were awarded six corners to Vermont's four in the contest.
  • Manske had one save in the game, while Herceg came up with five.
