Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Hoyas Down Broncs, 4-0

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer team blanked the Rider University Broncs 4-0 on Saturday evening under the lights at Shaw Field. With the win, the Hoyas move to 3-2-2 on the season, while the Broncs drop to 1-5-1 for the year.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "Rider posed some very unique challenges, and if we didn't get things right there, they could have pulled us apart. It made us get better with a few areas today, which is good. But the nice thing was, we got goals. And the goals sort of can settle you a little. Now we're five games unbeaten in a row, and the next thing is to get to six. But this first phase of the season is over, and we have the BIG EAST which is a different kettle of fish that we have to manage. But overall tonight, I was really proud of the performance. A lot of guys got on the field, and everyone who went on performed very, very well."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas controlled the pace early, and managed a penalty kick in the sixth minute when senior Max Viera was taken down in the box.
  • Classmate Zach Zengue stepped up, and buried it to put the Blue & Gray up 1-0.
  • Zengue added another in the 25th minute when sophomore Mitchell Baker served in a ball from the right side. It went to Viera who passed it back to the middle for Zengue with the perfect finish to make it 2-0.
  • The Blue & Gray added one more right before the half when junior Matthew Van Horn hit a long ball to Mateo Ponce Ocampo. The junior went past his defender and shot with his left foot to the far post to beat the keeper to put the Hoyas up 3-0 at the break.
  • The second half belonged to the Hoyas as Georgetown had all of the momentum and continued to send a barrage of shots at Rider keeper Marius Helias.
  • The Blue & Gray added one more in the second half when Matthew Helfrich passed it to Jack Brown in the corner. He sent it to the back post, and found the head of a flying Jack Lindimore who redirected it in for his first-career goal on the Hilltop and the 4-0 score which would stand as the final.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Rider 22-5, and the Hoyas had 17 on goal to the Broncs' one.
  • The Hoyas were awarded nine corners to the Rider's one in the contest.
  • Tenzing Manske was credited with the win and a share of the shutout despite no saves in the game, and Charlie DeMarco also took a share of the clean sheet notching one save in his first-career outing.
  • Helias took the loss, but had 13 saves in the contest.
  • Zengue's brace was the third of his career.
  • Lindimore's goal and Helfrich's assist was the first of their careers.
