WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer team blanked the Butler University Bulldogs 5-0 on Saturday evening at the Butler Bowl in Indianapolis, Indiana in both squads' BIG EAST Conference opener. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 4-2-2 on the season and 1-0-0 in BIG EAST play, while the Bulldogs drop to 2-6 for the year and 0-1 in league play.
Head Coach Brian Wiese
- "The guys are in a place where they are doing their jobs. Tonight we started both halves incredibly well, scoring early goals in both makes it easier to have a performance. We were also really happy to get the shutout. Tenzing (Manske) made a great save on the free kick, and Charlie (DeMarco) came in and made a good save when he needed to. We're getting the little moments right. Guys are making plays in the box on both ends of the field and our older guys are starting to look old. Our juniors and seniors are handling the important moments, and that's a recipe for success. Scoring five goals and getting the shutout on the road in the BIG EAST isn't easy, so we'll take it tonight and get ready for George Mason on Tuesday."
How it Happened
- The Hoyas got on the board early and often as GU scored its first goal just four minutes into the contest as junior Matthew Van Horn sent a low cross across the box, and senior Zach Zengue slid his right foot forward to tap it in.
- The Blue & Gray doubled the score in the 21st minute when junior Matthew Helfrich hit in a cross and connected with Zengue who was streaking up the middle of the field and managed to redirect it past keeper Aurie Briscoe to make it 2-0.
- Georgetown added another in the 40th minute as junior Eric Howard passed it to classmate Oliver Stafford in front of the net. Stafford took a touch and fired to put GU ahead 3-0 which would stand at the break.
- The Hoyas picked up where they left off, scoring just 35 seconds into the second half.
- Sophomore Mitchell Baker's shot was blocked, but the rebound found the foot of freshman Loukas Maroutsis who sent it to the back of the net to put the Blue & Gray on top 4-0.
- Zengue completed the hat trick in the 66th minute as senior Max Viera sent a perfect ball downfield, and Zengue split the defenders before knocking it in past Briscoe who was forced to come off his line.
- At the final whistle, the Hoyas had the 5-0 victory.
