WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Georgetown University men's soccer team shut out the St. John's University Red Storm 2-0 on Saturday evening under the lights at Shaw Field in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 6-2-2 on the season and 2-0-0 in league play, while the Red Storm drops to 4-3-3 for the year and 0-1-1 in the conference.
Head Coach Brian Wiese
- "I'm really happy with the guys finding a way to do this against St John's who is a really tricky team for everybody. They're super well coached, super disciplined and they defend in a way that makes them really big. Last year, when we were up at St John's, the entire first half had zero shots. And that's a credit to what they do. Tonight, our first half was fantastic for the chances we created. It was really important to get the first goal, and then obviously going in 2-0 at halftime made the second half just a little bit more about dividing your time or waiting a little bit there and doing more pressing. It's a BIG EAST win and a shutout. We went the month of September without losing, we're eight games unbeaten and I think the team's in a good place."
How it Happened
- The Hoyas maintained possession for much of the first half as Georgetown had a number of good looks that were saved by St.John's keeper Alec McLachlan.
- In the 28th minute, junior Matthew Helfrich knocked the ball towards the goal, an SJU defender tried to redirect the ball back to McLachlan but it went past him for the own goal.
- Just seven minutes later, it was the foot of one of the nation's leading scorers Zach Zengue to double the lead as he shot in a beautiful goal off of passes from junior Jack Heaps and Helfrich.
- The Hoyas went into the break leading 2-0.
- St. John's had two solid opportunities early in the second half, and continued to push for its first goal of the match.
- The Hoyas were on their heels much of the period, but despite the Red Storm looking dangerous the defense stood strong.
- At the final whistle, Georgetown had the 2-0 victory.
Of Note
- Georgetown outshot SJU 10-7, and the Hoyas had seven on goal to the Red Storm's two.
- The Hoyas were awarded three corners to St. John's seven in the contest.
- Manske was credited with a share of the shutout and the win along with sophomore Charlie DeMarco.
- McLachlan took the loss with six saves in the game.
- Georgetown has gotten on the board first in its last eight games.
