WASHINGTON – Georgetown University's field hockey team lost 2-1 in overtime at Holy Cross on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 2-7 on the season while the Crusaders improve to 4-5.
Georgetown took the early lead, scoring at the 12:04 mark in the first quarter courtesy of a goal from
Katherine Malloy. The Hoyas held their hosts scoreless the rest of the half en route to the 1-0 halftime lead.
Following a scoreless third quarter, Holy Cross scored the equalizer just 41 seconds into the fourth quarter to knot things up at 1-1.
As regulation began to wind down, Georgetown found itself a player down for the final five minutes of the period following a yellow card. The Hoya defense held strong and a save from
Alex Duff with 33 seconds remaining pushed the game into extra frames.
In overtime, Holy Cross put the game away with the golden goal 3:04 into the 6v6 period.
Ella Fahey and Duff split time in goal, combining for seven saves. Duff had five while Fahey was credited with a pair.
Maguire Sturgis scored both goals for Holy Cross with Megan Schienbein assisting on one. Mia McClosky stopped seven shots on the day for the win between the pipes.
