Hoyas Fall at DePaul

CHICAGO - The Georgetown University women's basketball team lost a close one to the DePaul University Blue Demons 80-77 in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at Wintrust Arena on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Hoyas drop to 9-7 overall and 2-5 in BIG EAST play, while the Blue Demons improve to 4-14 on the year and 1-6 in league action.

How it Happened
  • A triple from graduate student Laila Jewett gave the Blue & Gray a small lead early, but the Blue Demons would keep it close for much of the first.
  • Five points from sophomore Destiny Agubata late in the quarter allowed the Hoyas a 22-18 advantage after the first.
  • Looking at a four-point lead early in the second stanza, a pair of free throws from junior Khia Miller sparked a 7-0 run to give GU its largest lead to that point.
  • DePaul answered right back with an 11-0 run of its own to knot the contest at 34 before Agubata stopped the momentum with a layup.
  • The Hoyas led 39-36 at the break.
  • DePaul took a one-point lead early in the second half, but midway through the stanza free throws would allow the Blue & Gray a 12-2 run to make it 59-49.
  • A spin move in the lane in the final minute of action resulted in the 61-53 score after three.
  • Agubata was everywhere for the Hoyas in the fourth quarter as the Hoyas clung to a small lead.
  • With 3:12 to play, DePaul tied the contest at 71 before junior Cristen Carter posted up her defender and connected for the go-ahead bucket.
  • The Blue Demons battled back, but it was again Agubata who found the layup with 38 seconds remaining.
  • DePaul would find a way to make two more layups in the game, and the Hoyas could not find the answer as GU eventually fell 80-77.
Of Note
  • Agubata led the way with a career-best 24 points to go along with five assists and three steals.
  • Jewett added 17 points and five helpers, while Miller and sophomore Khadee Hession rounded out those in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 58.3% (28-48) from the field, and allowed 52.6% (30-57) shooting by DePaul.
  • GU was outrebounded by the Blue Demons 28-21, and Georgetown forced 18 DePaul turnovers on nine steals.
  • Kate Novik led the home team with 19 points as one of three players in double figures.
