Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Hoyas Down Red Storm, 59-34

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team defeated the St. John's University Red Storm 59-34 in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at McDonough Arena on Tuesday evening. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 10-7 overall and 3-5 in BIG EAST play, while the Red Storm drops to 14-5 on the year and 4-4 in league action.

Head Coach Darnell Haney
  • "I'm proud of our group for showing resilience and winning this game today after a tough loss at DePaul. Our group came out ready to go today. They listened to the game plan, we were in attack mode and we didn't play not to lose. I'm just extremely proud of the team and especially these two young women next to me (Destiny Agubata & Laila Jewett) because they did what it took to win."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas came out hot as the duo of sophomore Destiny Agubata and graduate student Chetanna Nweke combined for GU's first nine points.
  • St. John's tried to battle back, but stifling defense and an 11-0 run that included eight points from graduate student Laila Jewett made it 20-8 at the end of the first.
  • Georgetown went up by as much as 16 early in the second quarter, but SJU answered with five quick points.
  • The squads would trade buckets for the remainder of the period, and the Hoyas controlled the momentum with a 34-19 advantage at the half.
  • Midway through the third quarter, St. John's staged a small run and pulled within 11.
  • However, a Cristen Carter layup at 4:37 sparked an 11-0 Hoya streak to give the Blue & Gray the commanding 47-25 advantage at the end of three.
  • A triple from Jewett began the final stanza, and the Hoyas continued to dominate on defense as well as on the glass.
  • Georgetown led by as much as 30 at one point, and even a late run over the final five minutes of play would not help the Red Storm as GU came away with the 59-34 victory.
Of Note
  • Agubata led the way for the second game in a row with 15 points to go along with four assists and a steal.
  • Jewett added 13 points as the other Hoya in double figures.
  • Junior Brianna Byars led Georgetown on the glass with seven boards as well as eight points and an assist.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 40.0% (22-55) from the field, and allowed just 28.6% (12-42) shooting by St. John's.
  • GU outrebounded the Red Storm by a huge 40-26 margin with a 15-6 advantage on the offensive boards.
  • The Blue & Gray also forced 18 St. John's turnovers on eight steals.
  • This was the lowest opponent point total of the season for the Hoyas.
  • The last time GU held an opponent under 35 points was an 88-31 victory over Virginia University of Lynchburg to open the 2024-25 campaign.
  • The last time against a Division I opponent was a 45-30 victory over Loyola (Md.) on November 13, 2018.
