Big First Half Propels Hoyas Past Marquette

MILWAUKEE - The Georgetown University women's basketball team used a huge first quarter to defeat the Marquette University Golden Eagles 63-54 in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at the Al McGuire Center on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 11-7 overall and 4-5 in BIG EAST play, while the Golden Eagles drop to 11-7 on the year and 5-4 in league action.

Head Coach Darnell Haney
  • "Kudos to this group, they just came out and fought. I'm very proud of them and their resilience. They came out and they played Georgetown defense which we had really harped on this week along with rebounding and making sure we protected the ball. For the most part, especially in the first half, we did that. Some shots were falling in the first half that didn't fall in the second half, but overall, it was a great team win for us, a great team win for our program. I'm just excited about our growth as a program and the growth of the young women in our program. They are starting to gel and figure out what it what it means to be a Hoya and what it means to play for us."
How it Happened
  • Dominant was the only way to describe the first quarter as the stifling Georgetown defense held the Golden Eagles scoreless until the 1:30 mark and forced an impressive seven turnovers throughout the stretch.
  • The Hoyas started the game on a 19-0 run with contributions from four different players including nine points from junior Khia Miller.
  • Marquette scored late, but the damage had been done as GU held a commanding 19-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • The Golden Eagles started to battle back in the second quarter, but the Hoyas had an answer at every turn.
  • Over the final two minutes, the Blue & Gray staged a 7-0 run capped off by a triple from graduate student Brianna Scott at the buzzer to make it 41-18 at the half.
  • The third quarter was a game of runs as Georgetown would lead by as much as 27 thanks to a 9-0 run, but MU answered with 10 of its own.
  • Fouls sent the Hoyas to the line, but Marquette would continue to push to make it 53-38 after three.
  • Early in the final stanza, the Golden Eagles cut it to 12 and had some momentum. However, Miller hit a triple to beat the shot clock which ended the run and gave the Hoyas some breathing room.
  • MU continued to fight until the end as they came within eight with 26 seconds to play, but the Hoyas stayed strong and held on for the 63-54 victory.
Of Note
  • Miller led the way for the Hoyas with 21 points in the contest going 8-10 from the field.
  • Sophomore Destiny Agubata had an all-around performance with 13 points while posting her second-career double-double with a squad-high 10 boards as well as leading in both assists and steals with five and three, respectively.
