Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Hoyas Fall to No. 1/1 UConn

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team dropped an 83-42 decision to the No. 1/1 University of Connecticut Huskies on Thursday evening in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at CareFirst Arena in Southeast Washington. With the loss, the Hoyas drop to 11-8 overall and 4-6 in BIG EAST play, while the Huskies stay perfect at 20-0 and 10-0 in league action.

Head Coach Darnell Haney
  • "It's UConn, right? Tonight showed us just how good of a team they are, this is probably from top to bottom since I've been here and played against them, the best team I've seen. We knew we were going to be in for a battle in the first half, and we didn't start strong, especially the first quarter, putting ourselves in the hole. We've got to be better than that, we've got to protect the ball, we've got to make sure that we're getting into our stuff and our young women understand that. We just have to move forward and get ready for the next game on Saturday."
How it Happened
  • UConn was strong from the jump building an 18-2 advantage over the first seven minutes of action.
  • A pair of free throws from junior Khia Miller sparked an 8-0 Georgetown run to finish the quarter as the Hoyas trailed 20-10 at the end of the first.
  • The second quarter started like the first with another big Husky run to take a 29-point lead.
  • A jumper from sophomore Summer Davis, and a traditional three-point play by graduate student Brianna Scott gave GU momentum before eight quick UConn points took it right back.
  • Another Scott three-point play with one second on the clock made it 51-20 at the half.
  • Both teams went cold in the third quarter, before an 8-2 Hoya run started by a layup from sophomore Destiny Agubata cut the lead to 27.
  • UConn would answer back to lead 60-28 at the end of the third.
  • Late in the final stanza, the Hoyas would chip away at the 40-point lead, but never came back, resulting in the 83-42 final.
Of Note
  • Scott led the way for the Hoyas with eight points in the contest.
  • Agubata pulled down a game-high nine rebounds along with scoring six points for the game.
  • The Blue & Gray shot just 28.6% (16-56) from the field, and allowed 51.6% (32-62) shooting by UConn.
  • GU outrebounded the Huskies 36-32 and forced 15 UConn turnovers on eight steals.
  • Sarah Strong led the way for UConn with 25 points as one of three Huskies in double figures.
  • The game marked the end of the first half of league play for both squads.
Up Next
  • The Hoyas will head back out for a BIG EAST Conference road contest on Saturday as the squad faces the Xavier University Musketeers at Cintas Center.
  • Tipoff is scheduled for 9:30 a.m., and the contest will be broadcast live on ESPN+ with Paul Fritschner and Rich Hoyt calling the action.
