Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Hoyas Edged by Xavier

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team lost a close one to the Xavier University Musketeers 52-51 in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at McDonough Arena on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Hoyas drop to 8-6 overall and 1-4 in BIG EAST play, while the Musketeers improve to 9-6 on the year and 2-4 in league action.

Head Coach Darnell Haney
  • "I think we got a great performance out of Khia (Miller) today and Destiny (Agubata) came on late, but it always boils down to the fundamentals. You have to make sure that you do your job and your assignment defensively, making sure that we are ready when we're put in a position to seal a game. We've got to make those easy baskets, and we've got to make those free throws. We have to do the little things to get back to winning basketball games, and I don't think we did that to the level that I expect today."
How it Happened
  • Two quick triples gave the Musketeers the early advantage, before a jumper from sophomore Summer Davis sparked an 8-0 run.
  • Xavier answered with another three to end the period and take the 9-8 lead.
  • The Hoyas regained the advantage early in the second stanza with a triple from graduate student Laila Jewett, and a jumper by sophomore Destiny Agubata.
  • A 10-2 Xavier run put the Musketeers back on top with four minutes to go in the half, and the Musketeers would lead 21-18 at the half.
  • Five points from junior Khia Miller and a jumper by graduate student Brianna Scott moved the Blue & Gray ahead to open the second half.
  • Xavier kept the pace, and rattled off a 7-1 run to end the third quarter as the Musketeers led 39-31.
  • With XU leading by as much as 11 early in the fourth quarter, the Hoyas answered back with a 7-0 run capped off by a triple from sophomore Alexia Araujo-Dagba to force a Xavier timeout.
  • The play of Miller and Agubata kept it a one-possession game as the time ticked away and the Blue & Gray looked for the go-ahead bucket.
  • It would finally come with 58 seconds on the clock as Brianna Byars' put back made it 49-48.
  • The lead would flip back and forth as both squads made layups, but in the end the Hoyas would not have the final bucket as GU fell 52-51.
Of Note
  • Miller led the way with 18 points, while Agubata added 12.
  • Junior Cristen Carter was tough on the boards with 10 rebounds to her credit.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 38.5% (20-52) from the field, and allowed just 31.7% (19-60) shooting by Xavier.
  • GU outrebounded XU 43-37, and Georgetown forced 11 Musketeer turnovers on five steals.
  • Meri Kanerva led Xavier with 14 points as one of two players in double figures.
