Hoyas Defeat Butler, 63-46

INDIANAPOLIS - The Georgetown University women's basketball team got back on the winning track with a 63-46 victory over the Butler University Bulldogs in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at historic Hinkle Fieldhouse on Wednesday evening. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 9-6 overall and 2-4 in BIG EAST play, while the Bulldogs drop to 7-9 on the year and 1-5 in league action.

Head Coach Darnell Haney
  • "I'm just extremely proud of our team. I'm extremely proud of their resilience, being able to bounce back from a tough loss. I'm excited for them and excited for the games to come because they're starting to hit their stride. We just have to continue to grow and get 1% better every day."
How it Happened
  • Georgetown started off strong, taking a small lead thanks to solid play in the paint.
  • Free throws allowed Butler to move ahead, but the contest would stay close for much of the first quarter.
  • Back-to-back triples from graduate student Laila Jewett gave the Hoyas a cushion, and a 4-4 effort from the line for the guard late in the stanza put the Blue & Gray on top 20-16 at the end of the first.
  • The second quarter belonged to Georgetown when a put back from freshman Braelynn Barnett sparked a 10-2 run capped off by a driving layup from sophomore Amanda Ajobiewe.
  • The run put the Blue & Gray ahead 32-23 at the half.
  • A 3-pointer by graduate student Brianna Scott opened the second half as the Hoyas staged a 10-0 run highlighted by a transition triple from sophomore Khadee Hession which forced a Butler timeout.
  • Butler would answer back late, but the Hoyas held the 46-32 lead after three.
  • The play of junior Cristen Carter bolstered the Hoya offense early in the fourth, and Butler never found a way back as the Blue & Gray cruised to the 63-46 victory.
Of Note
  • Jewett led the way with 17 points including an 8-8 performance from the line as well as a trio of triples, while Scott added 11.
  • Sophomore Destiny Agubata led the Blue & Gray on the glass with seven rebounds in the contest.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 37.5% (21-56) from the field, and allowed just 31.7% (13-41) shooting by Butler.
  • GU outrebounded BU 35-24, and Georgetown forced 20 Bulldog turnovers on 10 steals.
  • McKenna Johnson led Butler with 11 points as one of two players in double figures.
