Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Early Barrage Propels Hoyas Past Providence

WASHINGTON – The No. 3/5 Georgetown University men's soccer team had a huge first half to defeat the Providence College Friars 6-1 on Friday evening at Shaw Field in Washington, D.C. With the BIG EAST Conference win, the Hoyas improve to 9-1-1 overall and 3-0-0 in the league, while the Friars drop to 5-4-1 for the season and 0-2-0 in conference play.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "That was one of the more impressive first halves that I have in memory for the boys. I mean, Providence is a very, very good team, and we were very aware of the threats they possess. I just thought the guys were about as clinical as we've ever been in front of the goal. So, you know, when you get that early lead, sometimes you worry about teams sort of taking their foot off the gas, and they didn't, which I thought was pretty key tonight. Having six goals in the first half was not expected, but very welcome."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas got on the board early with the first-career goal from sophomore Noah Satriano in the third minute. A header off a corner went to junior captain Tate Lampman who headed it down and found the foot of sophomore Casey Milliken. He slid it to Satriano who fired to make it 1-0.
  • In the eighth minute, a long ball from junior Jack Brown went to freshman Terrance Reynolds in the box. Reynolds took a touch and passed back to senior Mateo Ponce Ocampo, who was right on target as GU took the 2-0 lead.
  • The Blue & Gray continued to push with another goal in the 11th minute as senior Matthew Van Horn headed in a combination from Brown and senior captain Matthew Helfrich on the right side. After just 11 minutes of action, GU held the commanding 3-0 advantage.
  • After 10 games of chances, Reynolds added to the goal column for his first career score in the 25th minute. The freshman took it down the left side and fired to the far post as the score moved to 4-0.
  • Van Horn added his second of the match just three minutes later when senior Eric Howard sent a long ball into his path, and he just had the keeper to beat for the five-goal advantage.
  • In the final minute of the first half, freshman Stan Rzeznik scored his first-career goal when Milliken dove towards the ball and redirected it to Rzeznik who was able to connect as the Hoyas held the 6-0 lead at the break.
  • The second half was quieter for both squads until Providence tallied a goal in the 88th minute to make the final 6-1.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Providence 17-5 and had eight shots on goal to the Friars' two.
  • The Hoyas managed three corners in the game, while Providence tallied one.
  • Junior Charlie DeMarco played 64 minutes with one save to his credit.
  • Rzeznik and Reynolds' goals were the first on the Hilltop for both Hoyas.
  • The last time the Hoyas scored six goals in a game was a 6-0 win over DePaul in October 2013.
