Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Hoyas Fall 79-75 in Close Battle at No. 6/5 UConn

STORRS, Conn. –  The Georgetown University men's basketball team couldn't complete the comeback and fell 79-75 to the No. 6/5 University of Connecticut Huskies on Saturday night at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs. With the loss, the Hoyas slip to 13-12 on the season with a 5-9 record in BIG EAST play while the Huskies improve to 24-2 with a 14-1 record in league action.

ON THE RECORD
"Great BIG EAST game. A very, very tough place to play. I'm proud of our men. I thought we got better today. You know, we didn't win the game, yet I thought we improved. I thought our men were really locked in, dialed in, you know, we had to withstand a couple of runs, but I liked our maturity. I liked our poise, especially down the stretch. And again, we got to find a way to do the little things to get us over the hump. I thought they did the simple things better than us today, and that was the result of the game.," - Head Coach Ed Cooley

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • KJ Lewis led a trio of Hoyas in double figures with a game-best 24 points on 50.0% (9-18) shooting and a 2-for-3 performance from the charity stripe. He had a complete game with a squad-best nine rebounds and a game-best five steals as well as a trio of assists.
  • Vince Iwuchukwu followed up with 16 points on an efficient 4-for-6 performance from the field off the bench while tallying another eight from the free throw line while adding seven boards, including three on the offensive glass.
  • Also coming off the bench, Kayvaun Mulready tallied a career-high 15 points on a 4-for-7 performance, all from deep, to go along with 3-for-4 from the charity stripe.
  • Jeremiah Williams paced the offense with five helpers on the day.
  • Georgetown shot 43.6% (24-55) for the game and 42.9% (12-28) from deep.
  • The Blue & Gray got outrebounded by the Huskies, 34-31.

HUSKY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Solo Ball led a quintet of Huskies in double figures with 20 points, followed by Alex Karaban (18), Silas Demary Jr. (15), Braylon Mullins (10) and Eric Reibe (10).
  • Demary Jr. nearly achieved the triple-double as he paced the offense with a game-best nine assists and led on the boards with 12 rebounds
  • UConn shot 47.2% (25-53) for the game and 32.4% (11-34) from beyond the arc.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UConn got on the board first with a triple but Lewis tied it right back with a trey of his own. However, another pair of 3-pointers put the Huskies up six (9-3) early. Back-to-back buckets from Halaifonua and Lewis pulled the Blue & Gray within a possession before the home team knocked down yet another trey before the first media timeout.
  • UConn would lead by as many as seven (17-10, 13:30) before GU put together a 6-2 spurt via the frontcourt duo of Vince Iwuchukwu registering the traditional three-point play and Jayden Fort knocking down a triple to pull within a possession (19-16).
  • Back-to-back layups gave the Huskies some breathing room before Georgetown staged a 9-2 run to knot the game at 25 apiece. A Lewis 3-pointer sparked the run that featured buckets from Lewis and Mack before a pair of Iwuchukwu free throws capped it.
  • However, UConn did not back down as the score tightened up and instead outscored the visitors 16-5 over the next 5+ minutes to take the 11-point advantage. Three points from Lewis sent the squads into the locker room with the Huskies up 41-33.
  • The Huskies came out firing in the second half, extending the lead to as many as 14 (49-35) before Iwuchukwu reeled off five of his own to close the gap to single digits. The home team would push it back to double digits but Mulready got hot, draining a trio of triples and knocking down a pair of free throws to score the next 11 points for the Blue & Gray and pull GU within seven (58-51).
  • Despite the home team pushing the gap to double digits, the Hoyas were unfazed and continued to chip away at the lead. A Mack 3-pointer coupled with a Caleb Williams bucket made it a two-possession game as UConn held the 67-62 advantage with 4:31 on the clock. Late in the frame, a pair of GU treys sandwiched a UConn triple as Georgetown cut the deficit to four (72-68) and forced the UConn timeout.
  • Trailing seven (77-70), Lewis drained a 3-pointer and drew the foul for the elusive four-point play to make it a one-possession game with 24.8 ticks on the clock. A clutch Lewis steal on the inbound gave Georgetown possession with 12.8 second remaining in regulation and set the squads into the huddle for the final timeout.
  • Out of the huddle, the Hoyas attempted to get the shot off but the Huskies fouled early sending Mulready to the line down three. Late free throws on both ends provided the 79-75 final score in favor of the home team.

OF NOTE
  • When Lewis knocked down a jumper with 7:43 remaining in the second half, he tallied his 1,000th collegiate point. The first 621 of his career came at Arizona.
  • The 12 3-pointers is a season best for the squad. The team previously hit 11 against nonconference opponents UMBC (12/03/2025) and Coppin State (12/22/2025) and tallied 10 at BIG EAST opponent Butler (01/31/2026). It is the first time this season the Hoyas have reached double-digit 3-pointers and not won the contest.
