Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Georgetown Falls to Providence

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team lost a close one to the Providence College Friars 59-54 on Saturday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at McDonough Arena. With the loss, the Hoyas drop to 12-13 overall and 5-11 in BIG EAST play, while the Friars improve to 13-14 and 6-10 in league action.

Head Coach Darnell Haney
  • "We just have to get better at simple. We missed too many layups in there, we missed some free throws and we need to be better at simple. We have to execute our game plan, and not let one mistake turn into two or three."
How it Happened
  • Providence led early, but a triple from sophomore Khadee Hession sparked an 11-0 run capped off by a pair of buckets from classmate Indya Davis.
  • The Friars would score with one tick remaining in the first quarter, but GU held the slight 14-8 advantage.
  • A 7-0 Providence run opened the second quarter, but GU answered right back with a 7-0 run including five of the points coming from graduate student Chetanna Nweke.
  • The squads would continue to battle, and a late 3-pointer from sophomore Summer Davis put the Blue & Gray on top 26-19 at the half.
  • Georgetown clung to a small advantage throughout the third quarter and led by as much as eight, 35-27, midway through.
  • Providence would stage a late 14-2 run to close out the third quarter as the visitors took the 41-37 lead going into the final period.
  • The Hoyas began the final quarter with all of the momentum as the dominant play of graduate student Brianna Scott and junior Brianna Byars put the Blue & Gray back on top with the pair combining for 11 points.
  • Just 30 seconds later, Providence knocked down a jumper as PC eventually regained the lead.
  • A triple from graduate student Laila Jewett with two minutes to play made it 54-53 in favor of the Hoyas, however, Providence would match that on the other end and hit three late free throws to make the final 59-54.
Of Note
  • Scott had an all-around performance for the Hoyas leading the squad with 17 points on 7-9 shooting, eight rebounds, two blocks as well as a steal and an assist.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 35.7% (20-56) from the field, and allowed 37.9% (22-58) shooting by Providence.
  • The Hoyas outrebounded the Friars, 40-36, and GU forced 14 PC turnovers on seven steals.
  • Sabou Gueye led the way for Providence with 17 points and seven rebounds as one of three Friars in double figures.
