Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Georgetown Falls to Butler

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team fell to the Butler University Bulldogs 66-58 on Saturday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at McDonough Arena in GU's annual Play4Kay game. With the loss, the Hoyas drop to 13-14 overall and 6-12 in BIG EAST play, while the Bulldogs improve to 10-18 and 4-14 in league action.

Head Coach Darnell Haney
  • "First off, kudos to Butler, they came out in the second half and made plays. I think we did a poor job of defending and executing in the second quarter, and they hurt us. We thought we were going to be able to come in and not have to be disciplined on both ends of the floor, and it showed. As the coach, that lack of discipline is on me. We let people drive by us, we weren't in the right positions, and when you play against a team that can shoot the ball like they can, they make you pay. We had some great efforts by some people today, but we have to finish the job with finishing and rebounding the basketball."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas trailed early, but a layup from sophomore Destiny Agubata midway through the first quarter sparked a 10-0 Georgetown run that included five points from junior Brianna Byars.
  • With under a minute to play in the first, Butler knocked down a triple but the Hoyas led 17-11 after one.
  • Butler heated up from beyond the arc in the second quarter, however, the Blue & Gray always had an answer.
  • Georgetown managed to stay on top clinging to a slight 27-26 advantage at the half.
  • Butler took an early lead in the third, before GU clawed back to regain the lead on a 3-pointer from graduate student Laila Jewett.
  • The Bulldogs answered with an 8-0 run before graduate student Brianna Scott stopped the momentum.
  • At the end of the third, Georgetown trailed 46-42.
  • Agubata went to work for the Hoyas to begin the final stanza and cut it to two on two separate occasions.
  • Butler always seemed to have an answer, and got the stops and buckets needed to keep the Blue & Gray at bay.
  • Late free throws made the final 66-58.
Of Note
  • Scott once again led the Hoyas with an all-around performance and her 11th double-double of the season. The grad student managed 15 points, 10 rebounds, two blocks and a perfect 7-7 from the line.
  • Agubata scored 11 points as the other Hoya in double figures, she also managed eight rebounds.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 35.7% (20-56) from the field, and allowed 41.8% (23-55) shooting by Butler.
  • The Hoyas outrebounded the Bulldogs, 35-33, and GU forced 14 BU turnovers on eight steals.
  • Anna Wypych led the way for Butler with 13 points as one of four Bulldog players in double figures.
