Hoyas Fall at Xavier

WASHINGTON –  The Georgetown University men's basketball team fell to the Xavier Musketeers, 91-84 at Cintas Center on Saturday afternoon. ON THE RECORD
"Finish strong right, finish strong. We have not obviously had the year that I anticipated that we would have. It's been disappointing. But at the same time, there's still games to be played, and we want to make sure that we play with pride, play with an incredible amount of energy and toughness." - Head Coach Ed Cooley

  • Vince Iwuchukwu added 15 off the bench on an efficient 5-for-6 performance from the field to go along with five made free throws.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Georgetown opened up the scoring with a pair of buckets, one apiece from Julius Halaifonua and Isaiah Abraham. Xavier answered with a quick five of their own but the two squads would trade buckets back and forth until a Musketeer bucket to tie the game at 10-10 sparked seven unanswered as XU led 15-10 with 12:15 to go.
  • XU would continue to maintain that two-possession distance, leading 21-17 before the Hoyas reeled off nine in a row to start an 11-2 run with five different Hoyas scoring in the run in J. Williams, Mack, C. Williams, Jayden Fort and Halaifonua.
  • Xavier nailed a trey to make it a two-point game (28-26) but back-to-back triples from Mulready and Mack put the Hoyas comfortably up eight (34-26). The squads would trade buckets with the Blue & Gray holding a six-point advantage after another Mack trey (39-33) but the home team closed the frame on five unanswered to make it 39-38 in favor of the Hoyas at the break.
  • The Musketeers came out of the locker room on fire, turning the game around quickly on two made buckets to open the frame, taking the 43-39 lead in the first minute of the stanza. Trailing four, C. Williams scored the next two buckets for GU to knot the game at 48-48. The game would be tied two more times over the next 1:17 but frequent trips to the line pushed XU's advantage to six.
  • A pair of Abraham free throws helped the Hoyas get it back to a two-point game (63-61) but Xavier also used the line to their advantage.
  • Xavier would lead by as many as 10 down the stretch before sealing the 91-84 victory.

OF NOTE
  • J. Williams tallied 10 assists, a career best. His previous high was nine, a feat he achieved twice prior.
  • With 24 assists, Georgetown managed a season best in BIG EAST play with 19 against Butler being the next highest total in league action. The 24 helpers is one shy of the season-best 25 against UMBC on December 3.
