Hoyas Top Creighton 76-68 for Fourth-Straight Win

WASHINGTON –  Georgetown University's men's basketball outscored its opponents 49-39 in the second half to come up with the 76-68 win over the visiting Creighton University Bluejays at Capital One Arena on Wednesday evening. With the win, their fourth-straight, the Hoyas improve to 13-10 on the season with a 5-7 record in BIG EAST play while the Bluejays slip to 12-11 overall with a 6-6 record in league action.

ON THE RECORD
"I thought over the last couple of weeks, our preparation has been very good. I think obviously bringing Vince [Iwuchukwu] back into the mix really, really helps us. You're starting to see our identity that we had early in the season defensively, even though we didn't make a lot of shots early in the game, I thought our defense really kept us in because we missed a lot of layups, a lot of open shots. But then again, in the second half, we were able to rally." - Head Coach Ed Cooley

  • Vince Iwuchukwu rounded out the double-figure scoring with 14 points on six made field goals and a 2-for-3 performance from the free throw line.

  • Green totalled eight rebounds on the night which led the team.
  • Graves paced the CU offense with five assists.
  • Creighton shot 42.9% (27-63) from the field and 24.2% (8-33) from deep.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Georgetown struggled to get going as Creighton jumped out to a 6-2 lead early. Even as the Hoyas settled in, Creighton had an answer on the other end. A pair of Mack free throws pulled the Hoyas within two (10-8) before a Caleb Williams 3-pointer gave GU its first lead of the game.
  • The teams traded buckets as Mack strung together five points of his own to take the 18-16 lead on a triple and a driving layup. The Bluejays scored another two points to knot it again but Isaiah Abraham came up with the 3-pointer off a C. Williams dish to put the Hoyas up 21-18 and spark a quick 6-2 spurt fueled by a Jeremiah Williams trey.
  • Despite a 7-0 run from the Bluejays, a Kayvaun Mulready 3-pointer tied the game at 27-27 but a Creighton jumper sent the teams into the locker with Creighton up 29-27.
  • The Blue & Gray opened the second frame with a Lewis triple to regain the slim lead. The teams traded buckets early in the second stanza before a Mack triple sparked 12 unanswered as it was followed up by an Iwuchukwu traditional three-point play, a Mack layup, a Lewis layup and capped by an emphatic Iwuchukwu dunk.
  • Georgetown would keep the Bluejays out of striking distance as the game continued, maintaining a double-digit lead for much of the second half.
  • An Iwuchukwu layup ballooned the lead to as many as 15 (67-52) with 4:04 to play as the Hoyas cruised to the 76-68 victory.

OF NOTE
  • This marks the first time since the 2014-15 season where the Blue & Gray has had four-straight wins in BIG EAST regular season play.
  • Iwuchukwu notched his second double-double of the season and third of his career.
