Georgetown Makes History and Splits Day One at DePaul

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team made program history while also going 1-1 in a doubleheader with the DePaul University Blue Demons on Friday in a BIG EAST Conference matchup in Chicago, Illinois. The Hoyas fell 5-2 in game one, but the bats came alive in the second game as GU took the 20-5 victory tying the most runs in program history. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 7-6 on the season and 1-1 in BIG EAST play, while DePaul drops to 11-15 on the year and 2-3 in league action.

Head Coach Karla Ross
  • "Bouncing back after a tough loss in game one is what this team is all about. They truly made a statement with 20 runs. They kept their foot on the pedal and didn't let up. To get a win in BIG EAST play this early on is big for these ladies, and I'm excited about tomorrow."
GAME 1 | Georgetown 2, DePaul 5

Hoya Highlights How it Happened
  • DePaul struck in the bottom of the first to take a one-run lead, but the Hoyas answered in the top of the fourth.
  • A leadoff double from Campos put a runner on, and two batters later, a single to left field from Johnson allowed Campos to cross the plate.
  • The Blue Demons regained the lead in the bottom of the inning, and then added three more in the bottom of the fifth to move ahead 5-1.
  • In the top of the seventh, a single down the left field line by Brooke Rebhan pushed Nina Sarlo across the plate with no outs as the Blue & Gray was poised for a rally.
  • A fly out to left and a double play would end the inning, and the game as the Hoyas fell 5-2.
Of Note
  • This was GU's first conference game of the season.
GAME 2 | Georgetown 20, DePaul 5

Hoya Highlights
  • Taylor Francis had a breakout game going 2-for-3 with one run scored, a double and five RBIs.
  • Rebhan was also impressive, hitting 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and four RBIs.
  • Campos was 3-for-4 at the plate with four runs scored, a home run and three RBIs.
  • Claire Turner also had a homer going 1-for-5 with three RBIs to her credit.
  • Collins pitched four innings in the circle with five strikeouts to pick up the win.
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas were hot in the first as a leadoff single from Sarlo resulted in her crossing the plate after a hit to second by Campos.
  • Rebhan's double on the right side brought Campos and Emily Strittmatter home before she crossed the plate herself on the next at bat after a passed ball as GU led 4-0.
  • Campos smashed her first homer of the series in the top of the third as she put it over the centerfield wall for the solo shot to give GU the five-run advantage.
  • Both teams added a run in the fourth as Park crossed the plate on an error and DePaul managed one run in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-1.
  • The Blue & Gray added to the tally in the fifth when Francis' single down the leftfield line allowed both Strittmatter and Danie Koo to score.
  • The Blue Demons tacked on four in the bottom of the inning as DePaul closed in on the Hoyas.
  • A Strittmatter double in the top of the sixth gave the Hoyas some breathing room as GU led 9-5, before Rebhan singled to left to add another.
  • Francis would step up to the plate and rock a ball to the fence allowing two more runs to score and the Hoyas led 12-5.
  • Claire Turner's leadoff homer kept the momentum going in the top of the seventh, and with the bases loaded GU kept pushing to bring in seven more runs to make it 20-5.
Of Note
  • Campos' home run was her third of the season and the 23rd of her career ranking her third on GU's all-time list.
  • Turner's homer was her second of the season and the 10th of her career on the Hilltop.
  • The 20 runs ties the most in program history which the Hoyas did against Coppin State (20-0, 2007; 20-0, 2008) on two previous occasions.
  • It also marks GU's most runs ever scored in BIG EAST play.
