Nationally Ranked Sailing in the Midst of a Dominant Spring Season

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University sailing program has solidified its position as a national collegiate powerhouse this spring, with the coed (open) team earning the No. 4 spot, and the women's team rising to No. 6 in the latest Sail1Design College Team Race Rankings. Backed by a series of commanding regatta performances, the Hoyas are asserting themselves as the teams to beat in the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA).

The fourth-ranked coed squad has demonstrated exceptional speed and tactical consistency in early interconference competition. The team recently captured a major victory at the highly competitive Aaron Szambecki Team Race hosted by Old Dominion University. Besting a deep 10-team field that included Stanford, Tulane, Dartmouth and Navy, the Hoyas showcased the disciplined boat handling required for a deep run at the upcoming ICSA Spring National Championships. The Hoyas tied for first place at their home event the John Jackson Memorial Team Race and finished fourth out of 16 at the Graham Hall Team Race at Navy.

The women's team, climbing to No. 6 nationally, has been equally relentless on the water. Fulfilling Sail1Design's prediction that Georgetown will "battle it out to be MAISA's top team," the Hoyas proved their mettle by securing a decisive first-place finish at the ODU Women's Team Race. The winning effort was spearheaded by skippers Alexa Shea, Kelly Bates and Emily Doble, alongside crews Helen O'Neill, Anna Brzezinski and Ellie Smith.

The women's squad followed up that road success by defending their home waters, taking first place overall against an eight-team field at the Blaire Herron Memorial Women's Team Race in Washington, D.C beating Dartmouth, Tulane and Cornell in the final four to win the event.

"We are incredibly proud of how both teams have executed early in the season," said Head Coach Michael Callahan. "Earning top-10 national rankings is a testament to the hard work, communication, and resilience our sailors bring to practice every single day. While the national recognition is fantastic, our focus remains on staying disciplined, executing our starts, and building our momentum toward the postseason."

As the spring team racing season progresses, both squads will face continued cross-regional tests to finalize their preparations for the MAISA Championships and the ICSA College Sailing National Championships.
