Hoyas Defeat Villanova 9-6, Earn Top Seed at BIG EAST Championships

VILLANOVA, Pa. – Georgetown University's No. 8/12 men's lacrosse team beat Villanova 9-6 on Friday night to win the BIG EAST Regular Season Championship outright and the top seed at the upcoming BIG EAST Men's Lacrosse Championship, presented by JEEP. The Hoyas improve to 8-4 overall and finish league play undefeated at 5-0 while the Wildcats fall to 6-7 overall and 3-2 in the BIG EAST.
 
Hoya Highlights
  • Rory Connor led the Hoyas with four goals and scored his 250th career point in the process.
  • Kevin Miller added a hat trick with three goals, Liam Connor had a goal with three assists and Jack Ransom had a goal and two assists.
  • Jake Bickel had two assists as well.
  • Defensively, the Hoyas were credited with a season high 16 caused turnovers. Robert Plath had three to go with three ground balls while Ty Banks had two with four ground balls.
  • Ross Prince went 7-for-16 on faceoffs with three ground balls.
  • In goal, Anderson Moore (8-4) posted a .625 save percentage after collecting 10 saves on the night.
How it Happened
  • Georgetown jumped out to the early lead, scoring just seven seconds into the game with a goal from Liam Connor after forcing a turnover in front of Villanova's goal. The Hoyas added another at the 10:16 mark – Rory Connor's 250th career point – courtesy of a Liam Connor assist before the Wildcats scored two minutes later to make it 2-1. Three-straight GU goals, including another pair from Rory Connor, gave the Blue & Gray at 5-1 lead but VU scored with 1:38 remaining in the quarter to salvage a 5-2 score after 15 minutes of action.
  • Scoring settled in the second quarter as both sides managed to find the back of the cage twice. Georgetown hit the first two, taking a 7-2 lead at the 12:28 mark before Villanova scored twice in the final five minutes of the half to make it 7-4 going into the locker room.
  • Coming out of the break, scoring proved to be at a premium as the Hoyas couldn't pull away while the Wildcats were unable to make a dent in Georgetown's lead. The two teams managed just one goal each frame with Miller scoring both Georgetown goals in the second half to secure the 9-6 victory.
Villanova Notes
  • Nick Lucchesi and Ryan Martin both had two goals to lead the Wildcats.
  • George Glomb went 11-for-16 (.687) on faceoffs with three ground balls.
  • Defensively, Jake Melchionni was credited with five caused turnovers and collected seven ground balls.
  • In goal, Anthony Wilson (3-2) had 13 saves in the loss.
Georgetown Notes
  • The win gives the Hoyas their third outright BIG EAST Regular Season Championship. Georgetown previously has won solo BIG EAST crowns in 2022 and 2023 with co-championships in 2021 and 2025.
  • Liam Connor moves into second place on the Hilltop in single season assists with 44, passing Georgetown Hall of Famer Greg McCavera (C'99) in 1999.
  • Liam Connor ties Mark Murphy ('90) for 15th all-time in single season points at Georgetown with 62.
  • Rory Connor is now in sole possession of eighth-most goals in a campaign, passing Scott Urick (C'00), Greg McCavera (C'99) and Graham Bundy Jr. (B'23, MiM'24) with 48.
  • Banks ties Will Bowen (MSF'23) for fourth all-time in career caused turnovers with 62.
