No. 5/5 Georgetown Ties No. RV/25 UNC in Season Opener

WASHINGTON – The No. 5/5 Georgetown University men's soccer team played the No. RV/25 University of North Carolina Tar Heels to a 1-1 draw on Thursday evening at Shaw Field in both teams' season opener. With the tie, the Hoyas move to 0-0-1 on the year, while the Tar Heels sit at 0-0-1 for the season.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "It was tough, we hit the crossbar right out of the gate, and then they scored pretty quickly after that. That was a moment I think we handled pretty well, to be fair. UNC is a really good team, so we put this game on the schedule for a lot of reasons, and one of them is to try to figure out where we are. I thought the mentality to come back and get the equalizer on a great goal, was really good to see at this stage of the season against a high-quality opponent."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas had the first chance as junior forward Mitchell Baker had a header clang off of the crossbar in the third minute.
  • The Tar Heels came down on the other end and managed to head one past the keeper after a long cross from the corner in the seventh minute to make it 1-0.
  • Baker continued to look dangerous, with two more shots in the first half that resulted in saves from UNC keeper Alan Rutkowski.
  • Despite dominating possession, Georgetown trailed 1-0 at the half.
  • Baker finally got on the board in the 60th minute when junior David Urrutia passed it to Mateo Ponce Ocampo. The senior had a perfect touch to lay it off to Baker who finished perfectly to the left post to knot the contest at one.
  • Late in the game, Georgetown would continue to have chances as the game got more physical.
  • Despite some late hope, the Blue & Gray could not find the go-ahead goal resulting in the 1-1 tie.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot UNC, 9-8, with both teams managing six on goal.
  • The Hoyas were awarded four corners to the Tar Heels' one in the contest.
  • Junior Charlie DeMarco played all 90 minutes with five saves to his credit.
