WASHINGTON – The No. 5/5 Georgetown University men's soccer team picked up its first win of the season with a 2-1 victory over the Rutgers University Scarlet Knights on Sunday evening at Shaw Field. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 1-0-1 on the year, while the Scarlet Knights drop to 0-1-1 for the season.

• "I thought we had a really good first half, and then the game evened out a little bit more in the second. But I'm thrilled the guys found a way to get through the first one of the season. We were kind of needing to get that breakthrough, and they did it tonight. So we'll we'll take it. We'll take it and grow from this for sure."

How it Happened

• Georgetown had good looks early, forcing a save from RU keeper Rafael Ponce De Leon as well as hitting the post.
• Rutgers managed to hit the post in the 18th minute, but from that point on Georgetown dominated possession.
• The Hoyas eventually broke through in the 27th minute thanks to the strong play of Matthew Van Horn.
• The senior danced through defenders to the endline before passing it to classmate Matthew Helfrich in the box. Helfrich gave it right back and Van Horn fired to make it 1-0.
• That score would stand at the break.
• Rutgers looked dangerous in the second half, and the Hoyas were forced to play on their heels for much of the period.
• In the 87th minute, Georgetown would add a second goal as sophomore Casey Milliken sent it downfield to junior Mitchell Baker. He was covered, but  laid it off to junior Zayan Ahmed who had entered the game just two minutes prior. Ahmed fired low and scored to put GU up 2-0.
• The Blue & Gray would not get the clean sheet, however, as Rutgers scored a header on a corner kick with just five seconds remaining in the contest to make the final 2-1.

Of Note

• Georgetown outshot Rutgers, 13-9, and had eight shots on goal to the Scarlet Knights' four.    
• Both teams managed six corners in the contest.
• Junior Charlie DeMarco played all 90 minutes with three saves to his credit.
• Ahmed's goal was the first of his career on the Hilltop.
