WASHINGTON – The No. 6/9 Georgetown University men's soccer team handed the University of Delaware Blue Hens their first loss of the season on Thursday evening at Shaw Field in a 1-0 GU victory. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 2-0-1 on the year, while the Blue Hens drop to 2-1-0 for the season.

• "Delaware's a good team, and they had some moments where they could really hurt you. Howie (Eric Howard) makes a really important play in the first half to keep them off the board, but we had plenty of chances at the same time. It's one of those games where we have to adjust kickoff to five, it's hot, it's sunny, the crowd's a little smaller and you just felt the urgency and the energy was missing from where it needed to be. Sometimes you have to supply some of that at halftime, and the guys I thought responded pretty well. Tactically, what we were doing was fundamentally okay, and we just needed to sharpen up and have a little bit more pop."

How it Happened

• Georgetown had possession for much of the first half, but struggled to convert.
• Chances from junior Mitchell Baker and freshman Terrance Reynolds were all saved with acrobatic stops by Delaware keeper Eric Widrick.
• In the 40th minute, the Blue Hens were looking at an open net as Freddy Jeffreys got around the defense. Senior Eric Howard made a long run and managed to block the attempt to keep it scoreless which would stand at the half.
• The Hoyas continued to push in the second half, and finally broke through in the 78th minute.
• Senior Matthew Van Horn danced into the box, and then found classmate Mateo Ponce Ocampo who fired to the far post and past Widrick to put GU up 1-0.
• Delaware fought back for the equalizer, but it would never come as Georgetown held on for the 1-0 victory.

Of Note

• Georgetown outshot Delaware, 22-8, and had seven shots on goal to the Blue Hens' one.    
• The Hoyas managed 10 corners in the game, and Delaware tallied four.
• Junior Charlie DeMarco played all 90 minutes with one save to his credit.
• The loss was the first of the season for Delaware, and it also marked the first goal the squad has conceded this season.

• Georgetown will head out for its first road contest of the season on Sunday as the squad travels to No. 19/16 Duke for a 6 p.m. matchup at Freeman Field at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, North Carolina.
